We've never evacuated for hurricanes. At least not in my life time. My coastal area is full of dems.

Down side? Tourists. Not that I don't like them, it's that what used to be a more self sustainable economy (fishing/lobstering and manufacturing industries) is now dependent on tourists. Eat well in the summers, starve through the winters.

Absolutely!

Although we don't have hurricanes out here...

We do have Republicans!

Also, since the land along the beach is so desirable, the prices are through the roof. And when you add in no parking, and no privacy.......

Well.

People still want to live there, though.

And are hurricanes worse than tornadoes in the Heartland?

It's only funny if it has some truth.

coastal area.

Not too surprising, because as Peggy said, beautiful coastal areas are desirable, therefore expensive,
therefore they draw...Republicans.

I guess in one way, hurricanes are "less bad" than tornadoes, because you've got more advance warning.
You know for days that a hurricane is approaching. You don't have that warning with tornadoes.

SC is FULL of Republicans. So is a large part of FL. I'd say that isn't true of the Miami area.

But still, nothing but repugs here. BTW, Charleston has a great Democratic mayor, Joe Riley, Jr. I wish he would have run for Governor again. He likely would have beaten the imbecile we have now.

Than you do for tornadoes. The disadvantage is they are a lot bigger so if you have to evacuate, you've got lots of company and competition for places to stay.

I'd say living on the coastal areas of the Southeast is a point in favor of most of the inhabitants being Republican. As a native Floridian, I believe only idiots live right on the beaches and barrier islands. Idiots = Republicans.

your beachfront property will be underwater.

Investment tip: Buy some property on high ground 6-10 miles inland.

I live in coastal Alabama.
In the reddest county in a BRIGHT red state.

But have you ever noticed that a lot of gay enclaves are on or near waterfront?
I'm thinking New York City, San Francisco, New Orleans, Seattle, Key West, Provincetown, etc.

It's like 'straight' society pushed them and pushed them until their backs were against the sea and there they took a stand.

Good on 'em. They got some great places to hang.

Yes, we get ample warning about hurricanes.
Been through a half dozen or so 'near hits' since '93.
Evacuated once, for Ivan in '04.
That was a direct hit.

Lost 19 oak trees, just blown over and uprooted,
The high water table here means shallow root systems.

The eye went right over our house.
No damage to home, no flooding.

Voted for Obama. County Commissioners - 4 dems, 1 unaffiliated. 0 republicans.

However heavy incumbency support (like most places I suppose).

Another reason for me to *love* Ocracoke.

I suppose beautiful coastal areas have Democrats living in them too.

ps if i had the money and i could get a decent internet connection there then I could move...

That's a good Puke deterrent.

You also can't put houses on most of the beach front and the only way on and off the island is via public transportation.

though Ocracoke does have a landing strip for small private planes.

I was reading and comparing Hyde with Dare... it's light and day... Hyde is *much* more racially diverse than Dare (Dare is 99% white, vs hydes 60-ish %), and most of Hyde County residents live on the mainland, with their coast being on the sound. Hyde is also much poorer, and less educated.

Oh, and the only radio station on Ocracoke (they finally got one!) is on a non-commercial license. Yep, Public Radio. and no, not NPR... true local community radio.

We live in a beautiful coastal area in Maine and people are pretty cool. Yes, there are rednecks (especially the more north one travels) However when when the big boys came and tried to sell our little town of 42 Islands on LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas), everyone came out the woodwork, voted them down and sent them packing! Made me proud of my community. As far as flooding and evacuation, nothing yet.
