THE DARK KNIGHT actually had a happier ending than RISES

The Dark Knight ending

Gothamites refuse to blow each other up, illustrative of a spiritual victory. The Joker is captured. Batman takes on Dent's crimes and opts to fight crime as an outcast, thus stressing the importance of public service over vigilantism.

The Dark Knight Rises ending

After Bane's ruthless revolution, Gotham is left in spiritual ruins, guaranteeing class warfare for generations. Dent is exposed as a madman, while the vigilante is glorified. Bruce Wayne fakes death and abandons city in order to knock boots with a hardened criminal in Europe. The Batman persona is relinquished to an untrained rookie cop.

Honestly, which ending is rosier here?

Bruce Wayne simply no longer had the physical abilities he used to when he was younger. He was able to perform some strong tasks. But it was time to pass the torch. I didn't see it as abandoning. I assumed Gotham would be in good hands with the Robin taking over and that his name was a hint at the character Robin from the comics. I did like the ending to The Dark Knight better, though.
