She immediately burst out laughing, and when I asked, "so...what does it say?" - she said, "stand up and bend over so I can show you," or words to that effect, I don't wanna get too detailed.

but Americans can be awfully stupid when it comes to kanji.

I once asked some Japanese people why everyone was wearing T-shirts with English on them. "Your letters are more beautiful than ours," was the answer.

I think that a lot of Americans feel that way about kanji. They think of them as merely decorative.

I've seen signs and scrolls in stores in the U.S. that are hung so that the writing is upside down or sideways. I tell the people in the store, and their attitude is "So what?"

that the kanji tattoo you're about doesn't translate as "Drunk White Idiot".
