(11,833 posts)Took a long walk today. Just chillin' - reading all the hostilities (along with the occasional great post) in general discussion. A thought - too many take an 'all or nothing' approach to posting. Rather than non-defensively trying to listen to what the poster is saying, they project their own fears or biases, and presume things that are not there. Then, they misrepresent what the poster was actually trying to say. And a fight begins. I'm interested in the dynamics. But it makes me kind of sad. Every post doesn't have to be some sort of declaratory 'this is the post to end all discussion' type of thing. It might also be a 'well, I can see your point of view, but here's another way of looking at it from my perspective' type of thing.
What fun things are you doing this summer?

(1,014 posts)When my boys are!!! They are very close in age, very close!!! My oldest is 8, and driving me nuts!!! He will fall asleep around 4:00pm and wake around 12:00am my younger one, will sleep untill 8:00am and wake. So guess what??? Once one falls asleep, the other wakes!!! Leaving me awake!!!
I love my boys, don't get me wrong. They give me a lot of joy!!! None that I'd know I'd have!!! Granted in my fragile state, they do hurt me, however I don't care!! A broken bone, fuck it!!! I was having fu. With my kids!!!!
I am fragile, been in liver failure for 2 years, just my doing. Such a party girl!!! Made it better, however not enough. I'm trying for my kids, and my husband. They love me too much to leave them!!!
I'll take Insominia any day, compared to leaving them!!!
lovemydog
(11,833 posts)Your kids love you. Your husband loves you. You love them. Kick ass! You're doing better than a lot of people!
Oh, I just thought of something fun I want to do this summer. I wanna go to an amusement park and ride a roller coaster. I'm gonna make it happen.

(1,043 posts)I scoffed.Then I did the test.I sleep 8 hours now instead of 3.I was just amazed.
I have sleep apnea,my brain was starving for oxygen and waking me up.I go to sleep right away and wake up rested, even if I only sleep 3 or 4 hours for some reason.like a nap or an alarm clock..
I haven't slept this well since high school.Check out a C-PAP,seriously.

(66,446 posts)A natural side effect of the crushing syllabus and the constant stress.
When I couldn't sleep, which was two or three nights a week, I'd get up and study. That would alleviate a lot of the anxiety about exams. And some of the more boring material would help lull me to sleep.

(95,337 posts)Part of it is realizing I"m just a night owl and not a morning person. And yes I've been tested. I won't take Ambien but I still use over the counter sleep aid especially Sunday nights when I have the worst time getting to sleep. I am now finding that it helps to listen to music when I try getting to sleep so I'll pick a mellow album from my Ipod collection and put in the earbuds. Usually by morning the ear buds will be out of my ears and it does help me get some sleep.
Last night it was Iron & Wine 'Our Endless Numbered Days' album I used to fall asleep.

(1,014 posts)However with it being summer, and two kids under 10 at home, it's getting rough.
Now I have to prep them back into a normal sleeping pattern to go back to school in less than a month!!! It's just wearing on me...

(30,947 posts)In order to get to sleep, I have to drink almost a whole bottle of wine and take an over-the-counter sleeping pill. But I will often wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep and have to take another sleeping pill.
When I was working, I had no problem sleeping through the night, and I would automatically wake at 4:30 a.m. without the alarm. I have been retired for 4-12 years and have a problem sleeping since I retired. I still sometimes wake at 4:30 now and have to force myself back to sleep.

(27,169 posts)1. No caffeine after 5 pm
2. No work (as in checking your work email, doing business, etc.) after you get home.
3. Keep your bedroom as cool as possible, no warmer than 75 degrees if you can.
4. Wear cuddly socks on your feet. Sounds crazy, I didn't like the idea at all, but it really helps for some reason!
5. If you are still awake after 30 minutes, get up for 30 minutes before going back to bed.
6. Keep a scented lotion beside the bed. Using it before bedtime will cue your brain that it's "sleep time" now.
Of course, different things work for different people. I'm just putting those out there for you, if you haven't tried them already.

(21,901 posts)I have heard of, and tried, some of these. I was told if you can't sleep to get up and do something BORING -- don't watch tv -- too stimulating - do filing or something really boring.
Never heard of the scented lotion thing either. I like that idea.
thanks

(6,011 posts)baby supplies manufacturers make baby bedtime bath stuff and lotions scented with lavender because of this.
Aveeno makes a vanilla-lavender lotion for babies, and for the rest of us, Stress Relief Moisturizing Lotion- "calms and relaxes with lavender, chamomile, and ylang-ylang". Also, natural foods stores have stuff scented with lavender.

(1,014 posts)I love my Netflix and Solar Movie!!! However Solar Movie website has been in a fix for the past few days. Get to watch some of the newest movies there, without going to the theater! Just have to pick the good links that don't pop up many ads. And never download an app to watch. Filled with malware!!!

(6,795 posts)BF has every movie channel and I get DVDs from the library.
And of course I have to go to IMDB to check out the info on the movie that I just watched.

(45,516 posts)I figured I probably had anxiety/stress issues. If I have too much swirling around in my head, I can't sleep. It can be frustrating.
No caffeine after 5. Exercise of some sort helps, anything to get rid of some excess energy. And warm chamomile tea. I only take melatonin pills if its really bad. Other helpful supplements I've used were 5-htp, and the various relaxation teas like kava, valerian root, etc. There are also other lifestyle or diet changes that may help as certain foods can keep one awake. Wine really keeps me awake at night so I avoid it.

(36,458 posts)I suffered for a couple of year because I was really sick. Really sick. When I was finally diagnosed stage four cancer and had ass kicking surgery, then mind whacking chemotherapy, followed by years of blood works and worrying (think Money Worries by The Maytones), my oncologist declared me 'cured' (something he admitted he doesn't get to say often enough). After all that shit was behind me, I started sleeping restfully, and without any drugs.

(1,136 posts)I'm on 3rd night in a row. Seems this happens every few months. Summers are rough - my boyfriend's kids are 16 and 14 and they are on their "summer" schedule which sounds like your oldest son's schedule. I am a light sleeper so hear them rooting around for snacks, going to the bathroom, whatever. I cannot wait for school to start back up!!
I did take an ambien earlier. It didn't work, clearly.
Hope you get some rest soon!

Maybe in the late evening before bedtime we should wear those semi-dark glasses for computer use, or turn the screen brightness down.
Here's just one short article of many about this-
