Are the Academy Awards bigger than the Super Bowl?

Based on the TV coverage, they seem about on a par. From the LA Times:

  • “Good Morning America”: 6 a.m. Sunday, ABC: Reports from the Oscar red carpet.
  • “Countdown to the Red Carpet: The 2012 Academy Awards”: 10:30 a.m. Sunday, E!: A celebration of Oscar nominees, celebrity lifestyles and Hollywood.
  • “Academy Awards Red Carpet Countdown”: 2 p.m. Sunday, TV Guide: Sneak peek of the 2012 event with hosts Maria Sansone and Marc Istook.
  • “Live From the Red Carpet: The 2012 Academy Awards”: 2:30 p.m. Sunday, E!
  • “Red Carpet from the 84th Academy Awards”: 3 p.m. Sunday, Reelz: Live coverage.
  • “Academy Awards Red Carpet With Chris Harrison”: 3 p.m. Sunday, TV Guide: Chris Harrison speaks with Oscar nominees.
  • “Oscars Red Carpet Live”: 4 p.m. Sunday, ABC: Guests arrive for the 84th Academy Awards ceremony.
  • “The 84th Annual Academy Awards”: 5:30 p.m. Sunday, ABC: Honors for achievements in film take place; Billy Crystal hosts.
  • “E! After Party: 2012 Academy Awards”: 8:30 p.m. Sunday E!
  • “Jimmy Kimmel Live”: 11:35 p.m. Sunday, ABC: Special appearances include Oprah Winfrey, Billy Crystal, Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Tom Hanks, director Martin Scorsese, Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron; Coldplay performs.

That is all. IN this company town, many of us feel compelled to watch. Half my client base is in the business.

Seven hours of "pre-game" coverage?

I might try to catch the Kimmel special but the rest just doesn't hold much attraction for me.

but the Super Bowl is aired in many international countries. I'm seeing 120K for Austria, 136K for France, 1.23 million in Germany for the most recent SB. I don't see ratings listed for the rest of the countries, just the channel it was aired on.

I think many people don't trust Wikipedia, but it was the only place I could think of that would have easy access to this sort of information. Like I said, I don't know the Oscars' ratings so they probably dominate in that area.

I was only addressing the statement "I doubt the SB is" after saying the Oscars are watched internationally. The statement probably meant exactly what you said. I took it literally when it was probably like saying no one goes to Jaguar games. They hardly sell out, but fans do attend the game but obviously the statement in my example doesn't mean literally no one attends a Jaguar game.
