Really trying to like Hemlock Grove

Running out of stuff to watch on NF, and gave this a go. It has a lot going for it. It's very well done, good SFX, yet the writing seems kind of lazy. And with 25 year old high school kids, of course. They act well, but when they interact with kids that look like the might actually be at HS (or even junior HS) age, it creeps me out.

It's stealing from just about every TV show in that genre that's been done over that past 25-30 years (and some PC games), but that's OK. Because it does it well, in many ways. But I'm well into season one, and it just gets flatter and flatter. Some of the episodes have been really good, but it seems like it's shaping out to be just one of those dime a dozen vampire/werewolf series that 14 year old girls like so much.

Is it worth it to keep watching this thing?

what have you watched and liked?

Husband and I loved MI-5; we went through the whole series in a few months, we've also recently watched The Fall, The State Within, Hidden, some of Jack Taylor, Luther (I like this series, also really liked The Fall), Salamander, and all of the Endeavour episodes. Oh, and House of Cards, both seasons.

Not really interested in Orange is the New Black.

Thought about Hemlock Grove, but haven't tried it yet.

American Horror Story has its ups and downs, but on the whole I liked it and would recommend it.

Didn't like Continuum at first, but I grew on me. Sherlock, of course. Not great, IMO, as many will have it, but certainly worth it. Off the top of my head

And I think I'll check out the NF group

Nice little series about a few people coming back to life in a remote French town. See it now before the awful and inevitable American remake.

On Netflix, of course.

I'll never sit outside on my porch swing at night again if I watch it. Lol. I'm a chicken.

is one that I and many people I know have liked.

Spiral is an extremely dark French cop show. Unless your French is unusually good, you will not be able to understand much of their slangy speech.

Hulu Plus has a lot of great foreign shows, too: The Bridge (the Swedish-Danish original), Life on Mars (the British original--much edgier than the bland American remake) and its sequel Ashes to Ashes, Waking the Dead (you'll never find CSI satisfactory again), Braquo (the French again--even darker than Spiral), Line of Duty, Scott and Bailey (sort of a British Cagney and Lacey, only more complicated), and George Gently (takes place in the 1960s).

It looks as if you enjoy the Brits. You might like Acorn TV, which is another subscription series specializing in British, Irish, Canadian, and Australian TV. I especially enjoyed Mr. and Mrs. Murder and Miss Fisher's Mysteries from Australia, as well as Field of Blood, Vexed, and Vera from the UK.
