The IMDB Top 250 movies of all time.

At least according to their members' own rankings.

Three things:

1. I've seen 78 out of 250. Okay, I guess.

2. Of the Top 25, I've seen 21. I haven't seen The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, Seven Samurai, City of God, or Once Upon a Time in the West.

3. The Dark Knight is supposedly the fourth best movie of all time? Are you kidding me? The Dark Knight probably wouldn't even be in the Top 250 movies of movies I've seen in my lifetime.

2. I have seen 210 of them. The list is too slanted towards new stuff and fanboy favorites.

I prefer the Sight and Sound list

3. The purpose of these lists

Is to get eyeballs on the page and to get people howling about how terrible the list is.

4. IMDB is a little different in that it's not a single author's list...

....but rather an average rating compilation of presumably thousands and thousands of website users.

Although a good many of the "Best of" lists you find on the internet are in fact just what you describe.
