Rotten Row

Rotten Row is a broad path along the south side of Hyde Park in London. It was established by William III at the end of the 17th century as a safer way to travel to St. James Place. During the 18th and 19th centuries it was a fashionable place to be seen. The avenue was lit with 300 oil lamps in 1690 making it the first artificially lit highway in London. It was named Route du Roi, French for "The King's Road", but was corrupted in local dialect to Rotten Row.
