Need advice on what brand/type of portable lantern to buy (Original Post) dixiegrrrrl Aug 2014 OP
Go with the new LED's. They may be a little more expensive, but they don't get hot. Lochloosa Aug 2014 #1

We bought one for emergencies, and it was so wonderful we bought a bunch more as gifts. They're almost weightless and pack down really thin. For power outages or camping, this one is terrific.

It's amazing how much light some of the small LED flashlights put out. I have a little NEBO Redline that I found out in a swamp that some hunter lost. If I set it at "floodlight", it will light up the whole room almost as well as my old Coleman fluorescent lantern. Probably cheaper to operate, too. 3 AAA vs. 2 of the big lantern batteries. Granted the latter tend to last a little longer. It's only 4 or 5 inches long. Running the more-focused beam through a jug of water would likely be even brighter. That flashlight was a lucky find!

They're really cheap and they put out a decent amount of light. You might even be able to find them at the dollar store. There are incandescent and LED versions on the market.

individual hand held lights. Very cool. Got one for my son and family. Two little boys loved that there was a light just fir each if them.
