(6,261 posts)As someone who worked for a well-known software company in the Seattle area, and who occasionally travelled to the East coast, I can certainly attest to the West coast being a great deal less formal in terms of dress and human interaction. We even got lectured on it before going to the East coast so that we wouldn't frighten the natives.
I've often wondered if the East coasters got lectured (even warned?) about our ways also ("lose the tie, dude" .

(10,893 posts)if you want to see something like that here on the West, then Humboldt's the perfect spot for you. The Bay Area has its share of stoners and hippies, too, but Humboldt has been where its at. All you have to do is hit up the Arcata Plaza one day!
It is also slower-paced up here than the Bay Area.

The real problem is you never really know what to expect. You have to be prepared to go either way, dressing up or dressing down if you want to fit in, from East Coast business formal to West Coast Friday Casual. And coastal weather can be chilly in the summer.
