I am going to avoid the obvious choices here in an attempt to allow other to join in.
#1)" Valerie" Just for the guitar solo (notice how you don't get to see the actual guitarist's face)
#2) "Last Train To Clarksville" The closest they ever got to a war protest song (I don't know if I'm ever coming home)
#3)" Cuddly Toy" The ultimate poorly done 2:30 bubble gum song, which is really what they were all about.

(62,423 posts)Also liked Nesmith's "Joanne" - think that was a solo effort.
Mike Nesmith did that away from the Monkees, but it's always been one of my favorites as well.
There's a mournful quality to his voice not quite heard when he was with the Monkees.

(82,383 posts)We played the record on our little record player for kids. Then when Mom played it on the stereo, it had background banter in it - which could only be heard on the stereo. The worst of that was "Zulus?" "No, I usually won."

(33,688 posts)which I played in a cover band 30 years ago. Mickey sang the hell out of that one. "Valleri" (guitar solo by session ace Louie Shelton), "Last Train to Clarksville," "I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone" (proto punk, almost). Almost forgot "Zilch" - a little piece of Monkees surrealism. And "Your Auntie Grizelda" because it was funny and Peter sang it.
Lotsa great Monkees memories, though I was a Beatles kid at heart.

(599 posts)I've had a soft spot for the Monkees since MTV aired episodes back in 80's. Forgot how much I enjoyed some of their less popular titles.

(4,788 posts)This was their war protest song -
The King of Zor, he called for war
And the King of Zam, he answered
The fashioned their weapons
One upon one, ton upon ton
They called for war at the rise of the sun
Out went the call, to one and to all
That echoed and rolled like the thunder
Trumpets and drums
More upon more, war upon war
Rolling the call of come out to war
Throughout the night, they fashioned their might
With right on the side of the mighty
They puzzled their minds
Plan upon plan, man upon man
In the dying of dawn the great war began
The met on the battlefield, banner in hand
They looked out across the vacant land
And the counted the missing
One upon one, none upon none
The war, it was over before it began
Two little kings playing a game
They gave a war and nobody came
And nobody came and nobody came
And nobody came, nobody came
Nobody came
