Curious Baby Owls Investigate a Camera Left Near Their Nest, Cuteness Ensues

Here’s a cute little video that shows what happened when As Goprod set up a camera next to the next of an owl family. After the mother flies away, the little baby owls come out to investigate the mysterious object that showed up out of nowhere.

You can almost see the gears spinning in the owls’ heads as they try to determine whether the camera is friend, foe, or food:

Cute when little, but let's not forget they are excellent killers. One of the coolest predators.

The beak clacking is a defensive warning, like a cat's hiss. The owl wasn't at all sure what was going on.

Owls are wickedly cool animals. It always makes my day when I'm lucky enough to see one swoop by at night. Unfortunately, being in a city means I don't get that often.

Except for this one owl--I was coming back from a friend's place, and I happened to see one perched in a tree about 4 feet above me. I stood there and watched it for what felt like at least 10 minutes before it flew away (admittedly, it was probably closer to around 3 or 4 minutes. I was a little bit stoned at the time). It was the longest and closest I've ever gotten to see one that wasn't in captivity. They are beautiful. I managed to get a picture, thought it was terrible for various reasons.

EDIT: this is excessively large. Anyone know how to downsize it?

so amazing I watched it twice! We have owls here in WI, but I'm more used to hearing about wild turkeys ending up in car/truck grills, and not coming out alive. This is an amazing story.

We were going for a drive out into the bush in the rough riding old landrover, and he thought he left the bird at home. We stopped for gas in town, a 20 minute drive over potholey roads as well as part of the way on the highway with 60 mph speed limit. When we got to the gas station, the crow hopped off the axle of the jeep to greet Dad. He had managed to hold on to the axle all the way to town. It was quite an incredible feat for a little bird.

When we lived in WV, I'd hear the large ones do their loud "hoo, hoo" sound. Down here, these little ones hoot and tweet. We have large ones too, but haven't heard anything out of them.

Winter is easier because they love the suet and birdseed. And I can always tell when the owls are around because noise from the little birds is insane, especially the robins. It makes me realize just how many little birds are around.

In this case it would be EASY to make it look like the surrounding tree bark.

If the GOAL is to capture their behavior in the wild then you have to be invisible.

thanks for posting. I just got through with a totally irritating, annoying task. It lasted for 73 excruciating minutes (dealing with corporate bureaucracy). Having completed this odious task, I said to myself: "Let's go to DU for a reward." I found your thread.

Totally got me out of my crabby mood.
