or His Girl Friday. Penny Serenade is just too sad definitely a bad choice if you're looking for something light-hearted. That's a box of kleenex and a bottle of wine movie.

In real life, girl meets boy; their relationship is fraught and dysfunctional; boy dumps girl; boy becomes a lonely alcoholic; girl becomes a lonely cat lady, and they both die alone and forgotten. That said, I did rather enjoy "Bridesmaids."

Another movie I love, with another memorable dog, is "Everything Is Illuminated," though there are both humorous and tragic parts.

& i made a stupid mistake when i posted this thread. the movie i returned was "somethig's gotta give" (with jack nicholson--who doesn't have a dog) but i do own "as good as it gets" (with the dog!)

duh. i haven't watched "as good as it gets" for a long time--simply because it is not light-hearted enough (i find a couple parts too intense)

Between what happened to Simon and Helen Hunt's sick son. Guess "Everything Is Illuminated" would be a little intense for your mood. Another favorite of mine is "A Thousand Clowns" with Jason Robards and I like the Cary Grant suggestions. My two favorites would have to be "Bringing Up Baby" (Katharine Hepburn) and "My Favorite Wife" (Irene Dunne).

Jack's my second Brussels Griffon, a very unusual breed, though both of my little BGs have been rescue. I'm constantly being asked "What kind of dog is that?" and the only reference I have is the movie with Jack Nicholson and Verdell.

BTW, the pup that played Verdell was actually a female named Jill and they dyed her face for the movie.

guy gets girl, first they are mad at each other for whatever reason, usually the guy is an old fart and the gal is not, then they fuck, the end.

The plot is ridiculous, of course, but it's a comedy, so that's OK. The supporting cast is also great.

Marisa Tomei's character did whatever it took to follow her dream. But I had no dream. I hated my job with a passion, and was totally depressed that this slavery was all there was to life, all there ever would be. In the midst of my sobbing and despair, I heard a very clear calm voice in my head that said, "Start your own business." It came out of nowhere! I'd never considered such a thing, but it made total sense. The very next day I started planning. Three months later I quit the horrible job and have been my own boss ever since
