The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsYesterday was my last day at the job I have held for almost 15 years.
I was offered a better opportunity (though at less money, at least initially) in North Carolina, so I decided to take it. I have already found a place to live and have secured a U-Haul so all that is left is to pack up and move. I am a bit worried about moving the cat. He hates being in the carrier and this is about two days in the car.
I am a little bittersweet about this. Yes it is a better opportunity and I am excited about the job. But it is a small town and I am not sure I will like living there. And my boyfriend of 4 years will be staying behind in Texas so that's a little sad but we have Skype.

(28,799 posts)without a job...it's proven to be a good move. check out the NC forum; we just had a meet up of triangle DUers recently. it'll be good. it's a courageous thing you're doing. will you be near Raleigh?
ah, the cat. we had two. one spent the first few months in NC in kitchen cupboards. he was fairly traumatized by the move. the other recovered much quicker. they both made it.
NC is a big forest. a beautiful state, you just might love it.

The water's usually a little cold for me, but I grew up swimming in the Gulf! The rest of it though, sheer beauty!

(27,787 posts)I grew up in PA, and we would go to the Jersey beaches ... those were cold.
I now live outside Raleigh ... and we try to go to the Outerbanks whenever we can ... we love it.

(16,232 posts)grew up swimming in the Gulf, South FL - think Homestead & Key West, and the Gulf Stream part of the Atlantic Ocean (Charleston & Myrtle Beach, SC).
So yeah, it's a little "cold" to me! I could usually deal with Wilmington most of the time.
Of course I'd give anything to be in the "cold waters" of the Outer Banks rather than this freaking Blizzard in Madison, WI right about now!

(27,787 posts)Sounds like you moved in the wrong direction ... PA, and the cold that came in from the Ocean moisture made me move south ... you moved from the Keys (I love the water there) North???
Did you move for the job, or the spouse????
mzteris
(16,232 posts)but prior to this Mad move - I was in NC for 20+ years.
Born in GA, raised in South Alabama, etc. etc... our vacations were down one side of FL and up the other. (Dad was working, we were vacationing on his per diem! ) Spent summers in and lived in Chas, SC for many many years.
Moved for spouses job. He left me (I kicked him out - depends on who's telling the story!) about 9 months later. (yay) I couldn't afford to move back right then, and then the economy tanked big time. ugh - long story.
Now *I* have a job I can't afford to quit - and a house I can't afford to sell until the market improves, but - I hope to make my way back down thataway someday!
My daughter's in DC, my brother's in VA. My older son *may* soon be in Richmond (he got a job offer!! hurray! and is going to visit there soon.)
Madison is a very very cool liberal town (except for Scott Walker!!) and I love that. BUT it gets damn cold in the winter!!

(16,245 posts)I intend to get out there from time to time. I have a kayak and there are a lot of places around Elizabeth City to go. I am used to Gulf waters too but they are like bathwater in the summer.

(19,288 posts)From the vet, so I could move my cat. They sleep rather than cry, pant, and have their fur come flying off.

(32,086 posts)Do that, and kitty will be fine. It might take him a little while to adjust to new territory, but that too shall pass.
Congratulations on the new job and new location. I have a feeling you'll be much happier there than in Texas.
