Last week a grouse walked out of the woods right in front of my boys. Their reaction was priceless. Jake, who goes insane over birds, simply went into shock when one was just a couple feet away. I'm surprised he didn't faint. He just froze in place, all slack-jawed and gaga-eyed. Luna, hunter of all things small and squeaky, froze for an instant and then sprang into action. He didn't get very far, since I used the shock moment to tighten their leashes.
Silly bird wandered out., turned and looked at the boys and then turned back and scurried back to safety.
Today, we could hear a lot of different birds having a very loud discussion in that little patch of woods, but none ventured out. Then just a short way up, a great blue heron took off from the creek right next to us. I don't think I could have gotten a clean shot (pix of course), but maybe.
Last summer, we came upon our neighborhood turtle digging her annual nest in the sand between the road's edge and her stream. A couple weeks later, we got to see some new hatchlings scurrying down the steep slide to the stream.
I love walking the boys up here, even when it's just down my yucky, too busy street.

Enjoy your boys, magical thyme.
