Been reliving my love for the Kinks these last few days. Ray was ahead of his time, many songs are still relevant today. Enjoy!!!!

(7,661 posts)kick this. Ray's songs cover many aspects of life and should be heard by younger generations. His work was not just You Really Got Me.

UglyGreed
(7,661 posts)the first song I ever heard by the Kinks. I would sneak downstairs into oldest brother's room (he was 15 years older than me, he passed away at the age of 56 from pancreatic cancer RIP) and listen to all his records. He had great taste in music and I'm so happy he liked The Kinks.

(22,897 posts)He's written many hundreds of songs-- each with his special cachet
and songs about life-- some are amusing, some sad
But always fantastic

(23,340 posts)I am also noticing the roots in English music hall in their music. Aside from the straightforward rockers.
here is one of my favorites:
UglyGreed
(7,661 posts)Ray soaked this in and used it in his music which included his humorous lyrics. Also, when Ray and Dave were young their family had many parties at their home which included sing alongs which Ray used on stage all the time. Great, great band. Hope they can put aside their differences and get together on more time. Thanks for the reply!

(3,655 posts)I want you here with me
But I'm really not as cool as I'd like to be
'Cause there's a red, under my bed
And there's a little yellow man in my head
And there's a true blue inside of me
That keeps stoppin' me, touchin' ya, watchin' ya, lovin' ya
Paranoia, the destroyer.
Paranoia, the destroyer.
Great stuff!!!!
Here's one from 1975, Schoolboys In Disgrace. I feel this is the story of Dave Davies, who got his young girlfriend pregnant.
http://www.biography.com/people/dave-davies-20929715#personal-life
At age 15, Davies was caught having sex with his girlfriend at his high school, and was subsequently expelled from school. He later discovered that she was pregnant, and their families forced them apart. He didn't meet his daughter until 1993, and the experience deeply affected him and his work. He wrote a number of songs about the struggle, including "Funny Face," "Susannah's Still Alive" and "Mindless Child of Motherhood."

(22,897 posts)Ray Davies was a definite influence on Pete and Pete is still is in awe of Davies.
The Kinks/Ray Davies are trailblazers-- and I know that because their music still resounds!!
Nothing whatsoever dated about it-- it STILL rocks!!
Thank you for posting this, UglyGreed!!!!
Long Live the Kinks!!!!!

(22,897 posts)that when Dave (sadly) suffered a stroke that Ray had softened toward him. Now I wonder.
Those two were pretty ferocious with one another (I remember reading something about Ray
stabbing Dave in the hand with a fork when Dave ventured to eat some of Ray's french fries).
This was quite awhile back, though!!
You said it! God Save The Kinks!!!
