The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsOkay guys...How cold IS it?
Yesterday am, the incompetent weather people said it would be 59 today.
It is 42.
and the supposed ...revised...high of 48 is not going to be reached, esp. since we are now getting wind gusts up to 29mph from the north.
Just a reminder..I live in a SUBTROPICAL zone.

(10,575 posts)- Burlington, Colorado, on the eastern Plains near the Kansas border, dipped to -10 Thursday, setting a new record low for the month of November.
- Casper, Wyoming, dipped to -27 at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday night, shattering their all-time November record low of -21 on Nov. 23, 1985 (records date to 1939). The temperature stayed at -27 at midnight Thursday, making it the new record low for Nov. 13 as well. Previously, the soonest Casper plunged to -27 was on Dec. 5, 1972. Casper's high of 6 on Nov. 11 was the record earliest single-digit or colder high temperature there. (On Nov. 15, 1955, the high was only -3 degrees). Wednesday, Casper only managed a high of 3 degrees!
- Denver's high of 6 on Nov. 12 was the coldest daily high so early in the season. Only three other November days had daily high temperatures colder in Denver, dating to 1872. Early Thursday morning, Denver chalked up a bone-chilling -14 degrees, easily the coldest temperature so early in the season. (Nov. 17, 1880 was the previous earliest such cold reading in Denver.)
- Livingston, Montana, dipped to minus 21 Wednesday, their coldest so early in the season. That said, they once dipped to minus 31 degrees just one day later in the calendar, on November 13, 1959.
- In the Southern Plains, Amarillo (21), Lubbock (27), Childress (29) and Goodland (14) all set their coldest daily high temperatures on record for so early in the season on Wednesday.
- Riverton, Wyoming had a daytime high of 0 degrees Thursday.
- Redmond, Oregon, dropped to 19 degrees below zero Sunday morning, crushing its all-time record low for the month of November, previously 14 below zero on Nov. 15, 1955. Sunday's low was an astonishing 23 degrees colder than the previous daily record for Nov. 16 in Redmond.

I am concerned about loss of power, it is supposed to be 18 tonight and our Southrn sensibilities are not up for this.
All it takes is some drunk asshole to slide into a power pole, and we go dark...and cold.
We have more than our share of drunk assholes down here, too.

(30,947 posts)I am in Woodstock just northwest of Atlanta. Temps tonight are supposed to be in the middle 20s. I am hoping I do not have any broken water pipes. Last winter was brutal and I had 4 broken pipes which caused my water bill to skyrocket. I have lived in a mobile home since 1997 and had no problems with the water pipes.

(60,010 posts)Was NOT supposed to come this far south.
I was walking around smug as hell yesterday, taunting my friends and family on the West Coast.
forecast for today was 48. It never broke 42.
I would weep, but frozen tears dilute the booze too much.

(14,120 posts)It looks like we are expecting lows in the lower 40's.
Which means he moment the sun goes down, we get cold in a hurry.

(22,239 posts)We were having such a warm fall in the NW that the sudden drop from the mid-50s feels awful. It hasn't been above freezing in three days.

(2,580 posts)The invasion of winter has been a shock. Sleet mixed with snow or freezing rain has been coming down all day. We are not at all ready for this...it's not even Thanksgiving, yet.
Temps have been in the 30's all day.
Go away winter, we aren't ready for you yet.

(46,179 posts)One day I was in short sleeves and hadn't even been running any heat, and the next we had single digit temps.

(46,179 posts)I had about 6 inches of snow when I went to bed last night, and it's just getting light enough to see out there again...we're forecast for another 3-5 inches today.
Our high today is forecast to be 23; our low, 8.

(60,010 posts)I have a friend in Iowa who says how happy she is when the cold temps come because she can open her bedroom window and get some
"fresh air". Meaning without humidity and heat of summer.
But she does this in winter!!!!!
I am sure the window is open just a crack when it is so cold.
She blithely talks about wearing layers of clothes to go out and about this week....long johns ( they make very warm lightweight silk ones now), pants, double socks, 3 layers of shirts and sweaters and then coat, hat and scarf and gloves, and then somehow fits all that into her car seat and manages to buckle the seat belt.
I am so damn spoiled down here that I feel overdressed if I have to put on a bra and lipstick.
Yet, winter seems to have gone south for the season......sigh.
LWolf
(46,179 posts)I was grumbling the whole time because it was too hot, lol.
We aren't likely to see a high above freezing for a couple of weeks, at least. That can be hard on the pipes, so I'm, as usual, keeping my fingers crossed. I'm going out in a bit to clear a path on the deck so I can get out, and the dog can, too. I'll work on the rest of the deck a bit at a time until I get it done.
