Never been to In-and-Out, but I hear about them constantly.
I have been to 5 Guys, and they are pretty, pretty, pretty good burgers. They give you way too many fries for your own good, however.
For those who have experienced both, what's your druthers?

(38,506 posts)It's true about the fries.
We had a Whataburger, which I think is owned by the same people who own In-n-Out, but they took it away. I liked it.

(8,217 posts)I've had both.
I think In-and-Out has more options and a much better sub-culture.
However, when it comes to the burger, value and all the damn free peanuts you can get. Five Guys comes ahead.

when I order the burgers I tell them to cook them a bit longer for the tasty brown goodness on the smashed edges.

(10,624 posts)The fries look like the fries from Steak n Shake.

(7,661 posts)I find all their food is pretty tasty. I don't think we have a Steak n Shake near me, I'll have to look. Love a good burger.

(5,790 posts)Originally, I'm from NorCal, but I did most of my growing up on the East Coast. Five Guys is one of the few places outside the mid-Atlantic where one can get what I think of as "Ocean City Fries." If you ever went to Ocean City, MD, or similar places like Rehobeth or Cape May, you might have gone to a place like "Threshers." French fried potatoes; cut thin; skins left on; deep fried in peanut oil (accept no substitutes!); and served salted with sea salt in a big cup. You could dunk them in ketchup, but a true aficionado sprinkles them with malt vinegar, and eats them.

(1,495 posts)Grew up in SoCal and now live in the Midwest so Ive been able to try both. 5 guys is way too salty and greasy for my taste.
