Russians are TOUGH!

Above is a Russian passenger car on the Moscow-Sankt Peterburg line.

Many Russian train toilets have weak or broken springs on the trapdoor at the base of the bowl, providing a view of the tracks rushing past underneath and a refreshing breeze.

No TP, just a wire brush in a small bucket....

OUCH!

Interesting Train Toilets of the World website.
Some are 'squatters'.

the toilets looked nothing like this. They were actually nicer, roomier and cleaner than Amtrak's.

However, I was in the first class section where the sleeper cars are, not the standard fare cars where this photo was no doubt taken. Mind you, the first class car is only about $400 for the overnight trip - about what it costs to get from NYC to DC and back on Amtrak these days. The trip leaves St. Petersburg around midnight and gets into Moscow around 8 a.m. -- much more comfy to take a sleeper.
