I started my workday late yesterday afternoon just over the Wisconsin line, watching the approaching snows on my weather Doppler app with growing dread. Finally they finished loading my truck around 6:15pm, and I rolled south to the Chicago suburb of Melrose Park to pickup three more pallets to complete my multi-drop load.
My second pickup was at a yard my company shares with another small trucking firm, and our guys had me in and out in 15 minutes.
Even though I was able to continue in record time, it started snowing as soon as I got on the freeway and did not transition to rain till I reached Springfield IL.
The whole time I would glance at my weather map and see the dark blue mass signaling heavy snow seemingly try to chase me south.
This whole winter I have only ran into heavy snow once in Wyoming, and that was limited to a couple of hundred miles. If I had been caught in this one, it seems possible I'd be stuck for a day or two till the roads cleared. As it stands I'll bounce between OK-TX, and KS, then from Wichita KS I'll load for home and be back in So-Cal by Friday.
To all those that will be affected by this mega-snowstorm, you have my sympathy, but fortunately, not my company!
