Close encounters between deer or moose and cars.

I had one recently with a doe that ran out in front of me when I was driving on
a narrow winding road. Luckily I was driving slowly and was able to brake and avoid
the animal.

Yall in the states where moose live, are they much of a problem in this respect?

Moose are almost perfectly designed to destroy a car and it's passengers Thor_MN Feb 2015 #3

In Eastern Washington, esp. around Wenatchee, the elk come down to the river to drink, and have to cross a major highway.
Car/elk collisions are fairly common.
Elk are BIG animals.

I hit a deer while driving my Beetle. Lucked out and got the rear leg, the deer got knocked out of the way and all I had to do was bang out a fender dent.

a few years back my son was riding in a car that got hit by a moose, totaled the car and killed the moose... luckily no humans hurt, not always the case... I have had close run-ins a couple of times

What makes hitting a moose particularly lethal is what happens on impact:
When a car hits a moose, it usually strikes the moose’s legs, sending that whole
1000 pound weight (about half the weight of an average-sized car) onto the
windshield of a car. It then can bounce onto the roof of the car, causing more
damage to the car and its occupants

Lots of weight, high up on spindly legs. Through the windshield, as opposed to cattle at the same weight where the mass is lower and absorbed by the car frame.

it ran into my rear end - hit the back panel with its head - not sure what happened to it, but I had no damage.

We have deer, not moose.

They get hit in front of my house every so often. The worst one was a guy on a motorcycle who hit a deer. His leg was broken.

He jumped right in front of me. Luckily I was only going about 20 so car and deer left the scene unscathed but we both were a bit surprised.
