(118,309 posts)... Snowfall lasted nearly three days ... a third of an inch fell on the L.A. civic center ... Snow blanketed beach cities from Santa Monica to Laguna. Nighttime temperatures dipped into the 20s ...

(14,881 posts)We already had a pre-blizzard, follwed by a blizzard last week, with a chaser on Friday, with nonstop high winds from pre-blizzard day until sometime last night.
We do not, repeat do NOT, need another 8-12 with winds blowing everything all over hell again.

(58 posts)I'm a senior graduating in May and hope to kill off as many snow days in these first few months as I can. February is short, and President's Day is in two weeks; March has spring break, and in April, MA has Patriots' Day. Not having to get up at 5:30 to get to an 8:00 class in the dark dead of winter, and seeing February evaporate before your eyes (and the profs have to axe a few assignments and quizzes) makes it all that much sweeter when you're counting down in springtime and know you have only a few weeks to go.
Supposed to get 8-10 inches up our way. It's all, shall we say, downhill from here?

(24,013 posts)...the Washington DC area, that's exactly what it was like. A forecast was sufficient to cause this, let alone if the white stuff actually fell.

(28,941 posts)Even in central NH there's the Bread and Milk panic. Hubby went by the local supermarket this morning. He said there wasn't enough room between the cars to slip in a credit card, just about parked on top of one another.
I can understand this reaction in places like Atlanta or Houston, but this is New England; winter five months of the year.

(4,940 posts)And October, November, December, January..................... too early to tell for February, a little too cold to snow at 19 below (warm for this time of year, but the best snow is when it's above zero).

(24,013 posts)Lots of snow, being along Lake Ontario. Lived in Denver. Lots of snow. When my husband and I were first married, he was stationed at K I Sawyer AFB in the upper peninsula of MI. Lots and LOTS of snow.
For the last 21 years, we have lived in the far northwest suburbs of Chicago. I laugh to myself at how the the local weather forecasters carry on when snow is expected. OMG - it's going to SNOW.! Yes, it is. We live near Lake Michigan, and it is winter time. Snow is a surprise???

(28,941 posts)Mine put in a stretch there. With a middle distance stare, he tells of spending a couple of memorable hours during an Alberta Clipper digging through a six foot snow drift looking for his restricted area badge which had been torn off by a Force Five wind.

(24,013 posts)...until Sept 1985. 4 long winters.
He flew tankers.
How about yours? Ask him if he remembers the convex mirrors that used to be mounted in town during the winter so drivers could see oncoming traffic. The snow would get piled up so high you couldn't see anything while waiting at an intersection.
Winters are damn long up there. Trees don't get their leaves fully until June, and by August they are turning color. The first 4th of July we were there, we went to watch the base fireworks wearing jackets, scarves, boots and mittens because it was 42 degrees. When you walk outside in deep winter, all the little hairs inside your nose freeze stiff because the air is so cold.
the social isolation was worse than the weather. Not much to do up there. I didn't miss it when we left.
sarge43
(28,941 posts)No mirrors in his day, but driving there any time of year is Russian roulette.

(23,272 posts)It literally took 4 of us over six hours to get everything cleared and salted using a plow truck, tractor and shovels - driveways, parking areas, lanes to the paddocks, gates, door ways, stairs, manure spreader ramp, and walking paths between the barns.
It's beautiful but damn tiring. The horses were exuberant outside though. They LOVE playing in the snow and making "horse Angels". Watching them between taking breaks is fun.
Kinda makes it worthwhile.

Hope you're shovelled out and ready for action tomorrow!

(34,062 posts)i bet watching the horses in the snow is breathtaking & joyous!
i shoveled a little pathway in the backyard for my little dog. she goes out there & looks at me like: "what the hell?"
she seems to like snow, though. she bounded through it when it first came down. but now, she can't get over the wall of snow that's going on
