Who wants to read some good news ?

Last time I checked in at the DU Lounge, my cholesterol was too high and I was starting a statin drug. Many of you offered help and support, thank you very kindly. I'm taking hemp oil every day now and doing my best to exercise every day.

The good news: Total cholesterol is DOWN to 160, yippee! You want it to be 200 or lower, so I'm very happy about that. Only fly in the soup is, my good cholesterol is only up to 35, when it needs to be 40 or higher. The doc nudged me to exercise daily (doing it), lose weight (trying trying), maybe drink half a glass of wine per night (no thanks), and eat more fish (gladly). He wasn't thrilled about hemp oil (I don't think he had ever heard of it), but he didn't push me to stop it either (good for you, doc).

You have any good news to share ?

What was your cholesterol before and how long did it take to get to 160?

I took Red Yeast Rice for a while and it also lowered my cholesterol. What form is the hemp oil?

Thanks!

The hemp oil is in the liquid form. I take 2 teaspoons a day. Thanks!

Do you like garlic?

I love it and eat a lot of it.

My doc told me I have the highest "good" cholesterol he's ever seen. I'm a runner, and I drink red wine, but I attribute it to the garlic. I put it in every salad, every pasta dish, garlic bread, and I eat it roasted. I've been known to eat it raw. At any rate, I eat it every day. It has a lot of other great benefits too. But yeah, the garlic breath might be a turn off to any partner.

So if you like garlic anyway, give it a try. If you don't, I do understand lol.

I have read over and over that vitamin B1 (niacin) is really good for cholesterol. Been taking it for awhile myself.

We went on a diet called "forks over knives." Basically it is a vegan diet with an emphasis on green veggies. You can google it.
We started in late June and have both lost 60 pounds. I had my first blood tests ever after we were on it 2 months and my numbers were all incredible and in limits. My wife has had all sorts of cholesterol and diabetes problems and her numbers were all also in limits - but she is still taking a statin. They cut her diabetes drugs way back. I really had no baseline (thanks american medical system)

Keep it up! Maybe google 'Forks over Knives' and see if there is something there for you.

Edit to add - I have been a long term blood donor so I do have a baseline for blood pressure. I dropped @ 40 points in a month and am still down.

good luck.

I had dinner with an old friend last night & we had a great time. We've both been kinda busy the past few months. It was great catching up.

I don't have any good news yet but I am starting a 30 day vegan diet and daily exercise challenge in a couple of days. Hopefully, I will have some good news when I'm done. I have the cookbooks and exercise dvds ready to go. I just have to go grocery shopping.
