Husband and I are thinking about getting a topper for our bed, any opinions? Down, or other material? Thanks.

(332 posts)Read up on them a little bit and see if that would work for you. I have a 3" one that I just love, pads my hips and is wonderful.

(145 posts)I like my 3" natural latex pad, but found it was not enough for me so I have an organic wool pad over that - kind of the princess and the pea thing.

How good is it?? I actually had trouble prying myself out of bed the next morning it was so comfy. I was actually contemplating buying a new bed before I decided to try out this mattress pad. I'm glad I did because it saved me a few hundred dollars. Its like I have a whole new bed. Its ultra comfortable and plush. It fits my 16" mattress with no problems and I don't have to worry about it shifting. The fabric even keeps your sheets from getting cold which is a great plus in the winter. All in all a great buy.

(7,473 posts)All have been Memory Foam, 2 inches bu Carpenter Company. I made a mistake once and bought a cheaper topper, it ended up being the base for my daughters dog bed.
The best ones I have found are made by Carpenter, and I did try several. Isotonic
I have back problems and could not be without mine. My late husband loved it too, he had no trouble with his back, just loved the feel of the topper.
Because of the additional height on top of your mattress you would need sheets that have deep pockets, otherwise the corners will spring.
I understand you can buy the Carpenter toppers on Amazon. The product turns a little yellow with age but that has not made any difference in the comfort. I think anything thinner than 2 inches would not do the job.

(2,004 posts)We flipped over our pillow top mattress as it had become horribly lumpy. We put a latex mattress topper(made in the USA) over the mattress held in place by an old mattress pad, then we bought a nice puffy mattress pad on top of everything. It is very comfortable. We got an outstanding deal at Elder-Beerman using a combination sale and coupons to get a pretty good deal.
If you have Big Lots in your area, they carry some inexpensive latex toppers that are made in the USA, too. We got one for our kid's college dorm bed at a very reasonable price. You could probably afford two toppers from there. We will go back there if we need to add some more cushion as the current pad ages.
Good luck!
