Hell with the Lid Off



Pittsburgh, described by Frank Lloyd Wright as “hell with the lid off”, boasted 14,000 smokestacks in 1900. It was estimated that Steel City residents spent an extra $2.25 million each year on laundry and other cleaning because of the soot that filled the air, day and night.
