The Day-After-Oscar Thread

1. What was the best moment?
2. What was the most cringeworthy moment?
3. Where do you stand on the Sean Penn comment?
4. What was the biggest surprise?
5. Who/what, in your opinion, lost to a more deserving person/film?

E.T.A.

6. Rate Neil Patrick Harris as host. 1-10 with 1 being awful and 10 being best host ever.

1. What was the best moment?

Some will say the "Selma" song; others will say the Graham Moore acceptance. I personally liked the performance of Everything is Awesome and the Lego Statuettes.

2. What was the most cringeworthy moment?

The NPH joke about Edward Snowden "couldn't be here for some treason" line. I'm not a huge fan of Snowden, or Glen Greenwald, but I thought the line was as ill-timed and in bad taste as the dress joke.

3. Where do you stand on the Sean Penn comment?

Penn knows Inarritu, and I think it was really intended as a joke between friends. Penn isn't a bigot, and those accusations are irksome; OTOH I think it's something Penn probably shouldn't have said in front of a worldwide audience.

4. What was the biggest surprise?

Big Hero 6 beating HTTYD2

5. Who/what, in your opinion, lost to a more deserving person/film?

I'll say I was somewhat surprised Birdman won. I thought The Imitation Game or American Sniper might have gotten the Best Picture nod. I can't say I thought anyone was flat-out robbed this year.

Especially in light of the fact that someone British won the Best Actor (I mean where was that guy's green card.).

I know that Penn knows the guy very well (Penn was in one of the director's other movies '21 Grams') so perhaps Penn felt that he could make a joke like that and the director would have just laughed it off. But to the rest of the hispanic community it came across insensitive. What's worse, the Oscars were getting criticize for the lack of minorities nominated for any acting categories this year (and there were many who deserved the nod) so Penn's comment just really didn't help that cause either.

But the fact that two amazing feminists won the best actress - Patrica Arquette and Julianne Moore, this was a very positive thing. Arquette spoke out on equal pay for women and Moore didn't make any political comments but she has spoken at many pro-choice rallies over the years including the April 2004 March for Choice in DC.

BTW I was really hoping for either Michael Keaton or Steve Carell to win the Best Actor.

This was a year in which every nominee gave a standout, Oscar-worthy performance.

1. What was the best moment?

Several.
Patricia Arquette's speech.
Graham Moore's speech.
Common and John Legend's performance of Glory.
Lady Gaga's Sound of Music medley.
Julie Andrews' surprise appearance.

2. What was the most cringeworthy moment?

Don't have one. I don't cringe at many things.

3. Where do you stand on the Sean Penn comment?

Thought it was a joke (not a very good one), but I wasn't offended.

4. What was the biggest surprise?

That Richard Linklater did not win anything for Boyhood. Thought he deserved an Oscar for that incredible film.

5. Who/what, in your opinion, lost to a more deserving person/film?

I was satisfied with the winners, but I would have awarded Michael Keaton Best Actor. I did not like The Theory of Everything at all. I thought Eddie Redmayne's performance was an impression--and annoying.

6. Rate Neil Patrick Harris as host. 1-10 with 1 being awful and 10 being best host ever.

The opening musical number was fantastic. The rest? Not so much. Thought he was pretty bad.

he was seeing American Sniper as the winner in the envelope. I thought he was thinking about what snarky comment he could get away with when announcing that!

The fact that American Sniper didn't win made me happy enough to not care what he said about the actual winner. OK, in fact, I thought it was slightly inappropriate, even though they are friends, but not really too bad.

LOL

I thought Sniper was good but not great. It did not deserve to win any of the majors awards just because I thought there were better movies.

I think both sides of the Sniper issue have really blown this whole thing out of proportion.
If it won, it would bother me only because I don't think it was the best film of the year. Period.
