Are These America's Happiest Airports?

https://www.yahoo.com/travel/are-these-americas-happiest-airports-111723511852.html

Most of us dread layovers. The waiting, the greasy food, not to mention the unpleasant lighting can really dampen the whole vacation experience.

But apparently there are a few airports in the country where you may actually want to stop over.

Dating site MissTravel.com polled over 50,000 people and came up with a list of what may be America’s happiest airports. With perks like great local food, variety of shops, free Wi-Fi and other activities, these hubs make travel a breeze.

The top picks all had unique attributes that made them a worthwhile spot to kick up your roller suitcase but all received high marks for their (relative) comfort, convenience, customer service and cleanliness.

I've seen a lot of airports with overpriced shops and restaurants, though.

as their in-town branches do.

It deserves its number-one spot. San Francisco is pretty good for a large airport, LAX not so much.

Unfortunately, I have no chance to use Portland. I've flown through San Francisco a few times but was not particularly impressed or happy. But at the terminal at LAX where I was waiting for an Arkansas flight, there was absolutely nothing except for some way overpriced salads and sandwiches.

If you have a long layover at LAX, there's a nice lounge on the food court level of the International Terminal. You have to go out from the arrivals area and go back in again, but straight ahead from the top of the escalator there's a lounge that's open to anyone who is willing to pay $10 an hour. It has dim lighting, comfy recliners, and food and drink. I used it once when I had five hours between arrival from Japan and check in for my flight to MSP.

København's airport has nice lighting, nice shops and $30 sandwiches, full meals for three times that.

From what the restaurants there charge, you'd think it was a terminal for Emirates Airlines, Saudia Airways and private jets belonging to Microsoft, Apple, the Kochs and the Romney family.

Snakes on a Plane is the fifth installment in the Airport Franchise. It's got stars, an improbable disaster that takes place on an airplane and a happy ending...the only thing missing is George Kennedy, who I can TOTALLY see screaming about a "motherfucking hole in the side of the motherfucking plane."

other than a good flight is, free WIFI. I also would like a good meal, if I have the time. I tend to attempt to spend as little time in airports as I can so I do not often eat in airports.

If you want to open the contest to closed airports, the term for a six-hour layover at Stapleton is "extraordinary rendition."

during a long layover. The benches seem to be purposely made uncomfortable.

I once missed a flight to London due to a late connection and had to stay overnight. I was booked into an awful motel in the middle of nowhere, with literally nothing on the TV but Fox News and sports (apparently only conservative men stayed there). No point in sticking around, so I went back to the airport and sat around from 10:00AM to 4:00.

Talk about long days, sitting on benches with little back support.

Plus it's large enough to be served by most major airlines but not so large that it feels like a zoo.

On the negative side, it is about 15 miles from downtown.
