The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsIF you could only suggest one movie for someone to watch what would be the movie?
For me... It would be the one movie with a happy ending that makes me cry (Don't ask me why it does but I always cry at the end even though it is a happy ending.) and shows Rosalind Russell's full range.
Auntie Mame.

(13,430 posts)Showgirls is a movie that is so bad that it circled around back to good and has become a classic.
Yavin4
(35,445 posts)That alone makes it a classic.

The Accidental Tourist
Fargo
The Deer Hunter
Kitchen Stories ( a sweet little Swedish film)
Waterworld, thought by most to be the worst film ever made and I still love it.

(50,130 posts)If the person is somewhat like me:
Victor Victoria
O Brother Where Art Thou
Night On Earth
Cinema Paradiso
Last Emperor
Topsy Turvy
Life Is Beautiful
Derzu Usala -- Akiro Kurisawa
But I would assume that someone like me has already seen those.
If I had to recommend one movie to any one random person, it could be:
The Producers
Off the top of my head, that is. So many movies!!
And I actually don't really care for Shawshank Redemption.
Justice wanted
(2,657 posts)version or The Lane/Broddrick version?
grasswire
(50,130 posts)Which one do you like better?
Another funny movie to recommend might be "To Be Or Not To Be"
Justice wanted
(2,657 posts)more comedy one being a musical. Both are excellent (I do understand your feeling about Brodderick. It did take me a while to get use to his acting style. )
Hmmm.
I do like Mel Brook's version of the movie and not the older version.
(Mom and Grandmom always had AMC when it was American Classic Movies and Turner Classic movies so I grew up seeing all kinds of older movies.)

(11,546 posts)was a great one. Others have mentioned Shawshank and I agree with that one too. Also most Clint Eastwood directed movies. of course there is always Spinal Tap.

(34,183 posts)Its epic, challenged the status quo, had a great sound track, made me think about an alternative reality, and Scorsese directed it.
Great dialog between Judas (Harvey Keitel) and Jesus (Willem Defoe).
Jesus: Judas, my brother, I have something to tell you. I have a terrible secret from God. You know why I came to Jerusalem?
Judas: Yes. This is where the revolution is going to begin.
Jesus: Last night, Isaiah came to me. He had a prophecy, I saw it written. It said, "He has borne our faults; he was wounded for our transgressions, yet he opened now his mouth. Despised and rejected by all, he went forward without resisting, like a lamb led to the slaughter."
Judas: I don't understand.
Jesus: Judas, I am the lamb. I'm the one who's going to do.
Judas: Die? You mean you're not the Messiah?
Jesus: I Am.
Judas: That can't be. If you're the Messiah, why do you have to die?
Jesus: Listen, at first, I didn't understand myself...
Judas: No, *you* listen. Every day, you have a different plan. First it's love, then the ax, and now you have to die. What good could that do?
Jesus: God only talks to me a little at a time and tells me as much as I need to know.
Judas: We need you alive!
Jesus: Now I finally understand! All my life-all my life, I've been followed by voices, by footsteps, by shadows. And do you know what that shadow is? The cross. I have to die on the cross, and I have to die willingly. We have to go back to the temple.
Judas: And after you die on the cross, what happens then?
Jesus: I come back to judge the living and the dead.
I remember leaving the theater thinking if this had been the Jesus of the bible, I could have believed.

(20,564 posts)i assume you mean *i* can recommend only one movie, not that the person can only watch one movie
obv. if this is the only movie the person is ever gonna watch, they have no visual vocabulary and i would have to offer something with a simple narrative line but assuming a normal person with a decent background in viewing film who wants a recommend then mulholland drive is probably the choice
or maybe lost highway
