Well, my new car hunt has already gotten off to an unexpected start.

So I'm looking to buy a new car. And after snooping around for about a year, I've decided to start looking this week in earnest.

Basically, what I'm looking for:

--Hatchback/wagon style (my current car is this style and I like it)
--Simple, no unnecessary gadgets
--Ballpark price around $25,000 or less
--Good fuel economy (of course)
--It can't be too long due to my garage constraints. My current car is 171 inches long and I have about an extra foot of space once I pull into my garage.

When I first started snooping around, I developed a short list of possible candidates:

Subaru Crosstrek
Honda Insight
Volkswagen Jetta Sportswagen
Toyota Prius C

I've heard good things about Subaru, so right now I'd say the Crosstrek is my leading candidate.

However, in doing my research this week, I found out that the Insight was discontinued in 2015. So that's off the list. I also learned that the Jetta Sportswagen is being rebranded as the Golf Sportswagen, but that 2015s won't be out until next month.

I liked the Prius C because it gets awesome mileage. I prefer it over the regular Prius for a simple reason: I hate that stupid push button start that the regular Prius comes standard with it. I hate it with a passion. The Prius C seems more like a traditional car that I'm used to. But the downside is that I wonder if the Prius C is a little too small for my use. I have to fit two car seats in the back seat comfortably and I don't want to have the little ones constantly kicking the seats. Plus the trunk seems rather small.

So the Insight's off the list, the Golf Sportswagen won't be available for another month (and I wonder if there will be any redesign bugs I have to worry about), and I'm iffy on the Prius C.

Are there any other alternatives for me to consider? And does anyone have anything good or bad to say about Subaru, especially the Crosstrek?

It has a lot of room in the back, but it's not 4-wheel drive. My son has one too, and likes it for hauling his "stuff" (bikes, etc.).
