(34,403 posts)Not that the idiots obey that law. They've been going off since Friday.
What's the attraction of a loud cherry bomb BANG? I just don't get it.

But they already are setting stuff off.
(Yes, I like stuff that goes boom too!)

(1,136 posts)They haven't started here yet, thank goodness. I'm sure they will be primed and ready to go for the weekend, though.
I downloaded a classical music CD the other day that is supposedly in a key to be soothing to dogs. It was on a website I found researching how to help dogs relax during storms. Of course, we haven't had a storm since I downloaded it, so I will be trying it out this weekend, I'm sure.

(14,691 posts)I haven't heard anything yet. Fireworks are illegal here but once upon a time you could get lots of fireworks in Chinatown anyway. NYPD has cracked down on it for several years. There will be a few knuckleheaded individuals on the 4th but it's overall much improved.
One year some jerks nearby were setting off fireworks that went really high up. I was concerned they'd hit someone's house and start a fire. I reported it to 911 and figured if the cops weren't busy with more important things they'd show up. A few minutes later I looked out the window (I live in apt. on high floor) and saw two cop cars approaching on parallel side streets. No lights, no sirens, QUIETLY - simultaneously they turned onto the block where the jerks were, one from the east and the other from the west and SURPRISE! I'm still impressed by their coordination.

It's a double holiday here! Independence Day, and Ramadan! Both are being celebrated with noise. But only Independence Day is also celebrated with BBQ Pork, and Beer!

(53,339 posts)I'm hearing them right now for the first time this year, but so far they're small, just little pops in the background. I have a strong startle response when the bigger ones go off, and they really keep me on edge. Anybody have some dog tranquilizers for me?

(32,981 posts)I just discovered this group this last week, maybe too late for this year but ready for next. For Princess Peanut,(45#) 6mgs of melatonin in a big glob of spray cheese about 6:30 keeps her relaxed enough to chew her woobies then sleep till 1amish. Works for thunderstorms too.

(16,383 posts)The bangs, pops, and whirls begun last weekend in earnest and probably won't stop until the end of July. It makes me a nervous wreck. Fortunately, my dog was born deaf and is oblivious, but the cat is stressed and is not eating well. Sigh.

(3,829 posts)Fortunately I've heard nothing yet. This is the worst time of the year. I dread it.

(1,893 posts)I don't even get the appeal. A loud bang and you might blow a few fingers off...what fun. Maybe start an actual fire. How entertaining.
I just think of it as National Dog Torture Week. It must extremely painful to their ears, from the way react. I used to have to retreat to the closed car in the closed garage - the best soundproofing I could manage - and sit with my dog till the worst was over. It didn't help much; he would still be in a state of total fear and misery. And to think of all the dogs that will run away and possibly perish or be lost for good is beyond sad. I'm hoping the bone dry drought conditions here in CA will give people pause, but it probably won't.
This is my most hated holiday by far. I'll be glad when it's over.
