My now-deceased therapist. I said non-family because my parents were, overall, pretty awesome. I always love to hear about wonderful people, it's uplifting to me.

(5,829 posts)Older woman lived across street when parents bought their house. She took an interest in young couple & was there f/ birth of 3 of 4 kids.
She'd always seem to have enough dough left over each week to make me my own small kid-sized loaf of bread. Ate it at her house w/ fresh country butter and homemade jam (grape, raspberry or current).
I helped her make tons of candy (her divinity was heavenly), even ice cream once (hard work) and gather apples f/ cider and helped plant tomatoes and pollinate corn.
She'd been an English teacher and helped w/ school. Brought us grass skirts when she went to Hawaii. I saw South Pacific w/ her when it opened in the city. She was on I've Got a Secret. And introduced me to our governor.
She would occasionally be asked to appear before groups to talk about her fabulous women's hats collection.
Margaret Merrills was a wonder and I'm a much better person for having her around while growing up.

(2,900 posts)was my childhood doctor. Amazing man. He devoted his life to helping people.
I'd also nominate my 7th grade social studies teacher and school librarian, Leslie Hausladen.
