(1,893 posts)If you love Bob Ross and you're not sure why... if you get a pleasurable, relaxed feeling from listening to him for some mysterious reason...
Four letters for you:
ASMR
You may be one of the fortunate few who respond to ASMR triggers. For many of us, Bob Ross was the common thread that helped us discover this wonderful quirk that has brought us so much pleasure and stress relief. Bob Ross has the perfect ASMR voice.
Btw, there is now a Bob Ross Youtube channel with full length episodes:

(1,893 posts)I've pretty much concluded there is no single universal trigger, although Bob Ross is a common one. When I first heard about ASMR very casually, it was when I heard the mention of Bob Ross that my antenna really went up. I had always wondered why I felt so strangely good when listening to him (it sure as shit ain't the paintings) - now I know why.
Mind if I ask, what and who triggers you?
I'm triggered by soft speaking/whispering, tapping/scratching, hand movements and meticulous tasks involving the hands, page turning (especially if fingers are licked)... I'm still looking for more triggers.

(14,738 posts)In my case, I came to the weird world of ASMR through eye test videos.

(1,893 posts)I tend not to be triggered by close attention role plays. Don't know if you are male but some people have observed that men tend to be triggered more by close personal attention (eye/ear exams, haircuts, etc) than women (I'm female). Of course it's all anecdotal because the ASMR phenomenon has been so little studied.
I'm always interested to hear which particular gateway brings people to ASMR. The major ones seem to be Bob Ross, Maria (Gentle Whispering) and RR Cherry Pie.
It is, indeed, a weird world but I've never been one to shy away from weird.

(72,790 posts)I get tingles. I love watching ASMR vids.

(1,893 posts)I love encountering other ASMR people. Everyone close to me thinks it's creepy (and not in a good way).
But we know how damn good it feels.

(14,738 posts)Even though it really isn't at all for many of us. Certainly not for me.

(1,893 posts)I always say to people, look, sexual arousal is stimulating (increased heart rate and respiration) and ASMR is relaxing (decreased heart rate and respiration) -- they're different animals. Doesn't usually get me anywhere though.
It doesn't help that there's so much sexualized "ASMR" content out there. I put the quotes around it because in my opinion there's a lot of content being labeled ASMR that really isn't. Calling it that just brings more eyeballs. It's really a shame because it adds to the stigma that will be a problem for some people (personally, I really don't care if people think I have a weird sex fetish...it's none of their business).
Some people would be offended by what I just wrote and would say, who am I to say what is and isn't ASMR? But I am confident a lot of it is not - an example would be Hungry Lips and her popsicle videos - which is why I would love to see some really solid research being done. Maybe we could learn how to intensify and prolong our tingles!
