I've been a fan of Vangelis ever since a fellow marching-band weenie introduced me to his work via the album Heaven and Hell sometime in the the early eighties. He has an amazing talent of taking a simple, eight- or sixteen bar melodic riff and adding more and more color and substance to it until we're at the amazing, orchestral-sounding climax of the piece.

Among some of my favorite works of his...

So Long Ago, So Clear (with Jon Anderson on vocals)
The Friends of Mr. Cairo (and with Jon Anderson on vocals)-- a tribute to the classic, black and white Hollywood movies of yesteryear.
Voices
Anthem (FIFA world cup 2002 theme)
and of course, the Theme from Cosmos

You may have heard these already, but I've been a Vangelis fan since Aphrodite's Child, so some of these may be new to you.

Albedo 0.39
China
El Greco
L'Apocalypse des Animaux
Opera Sauvage
Soil Festivities
Spiral (To the Unknown Man in particular)

When that came out, I saw that movie every afternoon for maybe two weeks at the dollar theatre because I couldn't understand why it affected me so much. I didn't even know if I thought it was a good movie, but it certainly affected my mood. A large part of the reason was of course, Vangelis' magnificent and haunting music.

I bought the album right away, but was much disappointed that it was an orchestral rendition, since Vangelis had apparently blocked the release. What a letdown. I did eventually manage to get a couple of bootleg versions, which were actually better than the official release when that finally came out, because the official release didn't include all the scores.

Some of my most favorite music ever. And guess what! After reading all the hoopla about Flash being hacked, I just spent the past hour uninstalling it from my computer and then just adding it as an AddOn to Firefox and it's working perfectly! No more hang ups or browser crashes if I open a thread with a video in it. I'm a very happy camper/dancer now.
