(56,828 posts)Even if he does a great job, Jared Leto is following Heath Ledger's legendary performance...it's like following Abe Lincoln as president.
Margot Robbie looks like she'll be great as Harley Quinn.
Surprised they didn't feature more of Will Smith.

(1,681 posts)No way he'll allow his face to be covered in Deadshot's mask for more than 5 minutes tops. Joker & Harley are gonna steal this movie.
NewJeffCT
(56,828 posts)Leto and Robbie are great in the movie. Probably why there was a lot of Robbie in the trailer.

(1,681 posts)It would really put the pressure on Warner Bros to make the JLA movie a bigger hit.

(56,828 posts)I grew up reading comic books in the 70s and 80s - mostly Marvel, but some DC, especially later on (Spider-Man was always my favorite, though) - but I still have to pinch myself sometimes that what was mostly a geeky thing liked by mostly nerdy white guys during that era is now responsible for most of the top movies out there every year, a bunch of TV shows and events like the San Diego Comic Con are huge celebrity and media events that are reported on nationally. (And, while it's still not as good as it should be, the audience is far more diverse than it was 30-40 years ago.)
Heck, I didn't even like Thor, Iron Man or the Avengers in general - After Spider-Man, I preferred the Fantastic Four and the X-Men to The Avengers. (But, I loved the first Avengers movie, as well as Iron Man and the two Captain America movies...)

(1,681 posts)Been reading comics back when they were about .20 cents. Mostly 99.9% Marvel. DC just seemed too goofy to me for some reason. DC's Teen Titans was quite excellent during the 80's.
I slowed down when I joined the Marines & quit during the 90's debacle. The love is still there but it's VERY tempered. I'm big into horror/Indy/alternative/manga books now. I follow several forums about comics mostly to keep up with the big 2.
I used to go to comic cons all the time in NYC growing up. I'll eventually go to the big one in NYC when my son is older. It's quite the spectacle now with females & Power Girls cosplay as far as the eye can see.
The Marvel movies reminds me of the excitement I used to have every Wed. afternoon at my FLCS. So much so that my 2 yr old son's middle name is Thor. I would have called my daughter " Mary Jane" but I had a former Gf with that name so...
Kirby styled tattoos are coming after I retire from my job in about 5 yrs. A full sleeve is going to happen.

(12,132 posts)(my wife and I and he and his wife all went) that for the most part, comic book movies are all I really care about any more. At the very least, as far as seeing them in theaters. I'll watch all kinds of movies on netflix and blu-ray but if I'm going to spend the money at a theater for a big screen and nice sound, I'm just going to do it for comic book movie and Star Wars and Star Trek.
And I didn't even read comic books as a youth. I mean, I had a couple here and there but I didn't collect and understand the various universes like some of my friends did. I got most of my comics through George Reeves as Superman and Adam West as Batman and Saturday morning cartoons. And I got my sci-fi from Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers (beedee beedee beede, what's up, Buck?).
Not that I wasn't interested in them but I was pretty sheltered and restricted. My mother and stepfather barely let me do anything that wasn't jesus related. I only got to watch those shows because the were reruns after school and before thy came home from work.
We all loved Antman, by the way. Be sure to stay for alllll the credits. Even after they turn on the lights.
NewJeffCT
(56,828 posts)is that with Ant Man (or is it Antman?), they're reaching down to second or third tier superheros now. Through the 1980s, Spider-Man and X-Men were the two big names for Marvel, I think. The next tier was The Fantastic Four, Captain America, Daredevil, Thor, Iron Man and Hulk, and maybe one or two others. Marvel had Star Wars, too, which was also wildly popular.
Some of the other popular comic books were Spider-Man or Daredevil teaming up with another hero to beat some bad guy...
But now, we have Ant Man, Captain Marvel (upcoming), Black Panther (upcoming), The Guardians of the Galaxy and probably others that were not exactly A-List heroes back in the day.
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)but Guardians of the Galaxy was probably my favorite movie last year.

(29,414 posts)(other than AC's Femforce) I still don't understand much of what this thing is about. Is there a decent premise written up somewhere for those of us that read non-superhero comics?

(58,835 posts)An off-the-grid government agency presses DC Comics villains into dirt, impossible missions, which of course provides pliable deniability. If the mission is successful, they get time shaved off their sentences. If they fail, get captured or try to run, a bomb in the bases of their necks go off.
kentauros
(29,414 posts)That tells a helluva lot more than the preview. Unfortunately, it's geared toward the crowd that already knows the story. I guess when the movie comes out there will be a better narrative on selling it

(58,835 posts)The movie is not going to do well because most summer moviegoers are not going to be jazzed up about DC vilians they don't know, but here is a rundown of the members.
1. Rick Flagg - Government op and team leader.
2. Harley Quinn - Joker's GF.
3. Deadshot - Usual Batman villain.
4. Killer Croc - Another Batman villain.
5. Captain Boomerang - Usually takes on the Flash.
6. Katana - Usually portrayed as a hero.
7. El Diablo - Manifestation of a hex that is handed down from generation to generation.
8. Enchantress - Spirit of a witch who possess the bodies of beautiful women.
9. Slipknot - Uses ropes to commit crimes.

(56,828 posts)nobody that isn't a comics reader knows anybody other than The Joker. Will Smith will pull in some viewers, and some people will want to see the first post Heath Ledger Joker as well.
GOLGO 13
(1,681 posts)Still, DC has about a year to ramp up the hype machine. I like how they're slowly revealing the Joker's role in all this. BTW, wasn't that Batman on top of the Joker/Harley's car?
