(Words that follow aren't mine.)
I've learned something very important over the past few months. A life lesson of sorts. And it's this......the world's biggest lie:
"We should go for coffee."
It's a lie! Not a tiny fib. Not a good intention gone awry. Not a minor slip of the old memory. It's a lie. It's what people say to you to end a conversation. To make themselves feel better about not really wanting to talk to you any more via whatever forum they are currently talking to you - Facebook, email, in person God forbid! They just come out with it - "We should go for coffee." To which you reply, "That would be great. Let me know what works for you." And that, my friends, is the end of it. For real. THE. END.
You can even follow up with them:
- "Hey there. Did you still want to get that coffee?"
- "Yeah totally. Been really busy lately. I'll let you know what works for me"
And then.....yeah....you know the drill. THE. END.

(36,827 posts)Back in the day you invited your friends, family, and neighbors over for coffee. It's just what you did. I guess with everyone so enamored with social media these days, interpersonal time spent actually in person is becoming a cliche.
Rest assured if you ever get an invite for coffee from me, I'm quite sincere about it, and if you actually show up you'll get my interpretation of what the best coffee has to offer.

(16,334 posts)I usually give people a couple of tries IF it's somebody I think might be serious. Sometimes it is hard to plan a time to meet but if I throw it out and they can't find and stick to at least one date, then I go away.
Now, what I absolutely LOVE are people who invite ME repeatedly and then cancel every time. WTF?

(37,457 posts)It's not easy to always be socially authentic. People get their feelings hurt. However, it's worth it to aspire to.
