It used to be the thing to do, so birds or sea turtles didn't get them stuck around their neck and end up being strangled by them. Is this still necessary?

(2,404 posts)I've done it for years. Now it is just a habit.

(38,958 posts)I very, very rarely buy any soda of any kind and when I do, it's usually a 12 pack can.

(112,422 posts)Although, I don't purchase either soda or beer packaged that way very frequently.

(6,907 posts)but like everyone else it is rare to have that opportunity. Sometimes six and eight packs of water bottles we get for a camping trip or something have them.

(21,809 posts)No longer a one-use-only thing and certainly sturdier than those flimsy rings.
These can be used again and again and again:

(2,302 posts)I've cut down on these purchases since I started making my own iced tea to take out with me, using a washable bottle and an ice pack.

(87 posts)but sometimes it can't be helped. I have a pond in front of my house with tons of ducks. The squirrels like to drag the trash out of the bins (they even ate through the lids) so we are pretty careful on how we toss stuff out.

Even if I see them as trash on the street, I do that.
I once saw a sea turtle victim to one of those. It was something I'll never forget.
