I have a basic flip phone but I'm ready for a smarter phone and a Verizon store is less than a mile from my house...they've always been great for service and it's never crowded there. The technology makes me nervous but I trust I can manage it...

(8,747 posts)Looks like the have 41 different models for sale right now. http://www.verizonwireless.com/smartphones/
Just depends what Operating System you want, and how much money you're willing to spend.
Edit; They recently changed their fare structure. More info here.

(63,912 posts)is just too basic for that. Time for that damned upgrade. My kids are really making fun of my phone! "You have to punch in numbers?!"
I'll try to post a pic of the car on DU, if possible. It's really great. It's a Versa Sedan SV in what they call "Grey Amethyst," a beautiful shade of dark grey.
Does your daughter like her phone?

Was wondering about your car; glad you like it.

(12,132 posts)there are a few different versions between carriers but most all carriers sell pretty much the same things. Each carrier does load a lot of its' own software on top of the basic operating system though. But if you like verizon and they meet your needs then there is nothing to fear but fear itself.
I deal with verizon every day as part of my job - our company mobile phones are through them. But I currently use T-Mobile for my personal phone because even with the discount I can get through my job, T-Mobile covered my family plan for less money and more data.
I have noticed Verizon does have better coverage in my state though. It usually doesn't matter as I travel between big enough cities and and everyone seems to have the major traffic corridors covered between big cities. And everyone is always building more towers so eventually that won't be an issue either.
Go in, play with the phones. Crush some candy and fling some angry birds. Smart phones are fun! If you start with the cheapest data plan you can always upgrade if you find out you need more. And you may find you don't.

(14,275 posts)But they sell and support every brand out there. Personally, I really like my iPhone, but I know people who prefer their Samsung Galaxies. There are many great products out there. I recommend you look them over and then choose the one you are most comfortable with.

(2,015 posts)From Verizon. She had previously just had a flip phone and she was at my house today raving about what nice clear pictures she was able to take on her camping trip last weekend. It really does take very nice pictures.

(6,280 posts)...a $79 LG Exceed2 smartphone. Pay as you go. $45 a month for unlimited talk and text, plus 500mbps internet. All I need with my wifi. Haven't really seen anything a $400 phone can do that I can't. Still don't know all it can do. I do everything I need though. Text, vids, pics, voice text and search, games, tv, etc. 4 1/2in. screen is fine for my poor eyesight too. I like it.

(63,912 posts)Tell me about eyesight problems. My eye doc says he is seeing more and more YOUNGER people with blepharitis which I have developed. Why? Because of screens they stare at all day. I asked him what the difference was from reading books, regular newspapers, paper documents and he said the screens on computers and devices affect the human eye differently from words on paper. He got a little more technical on me but that's the reason I've got blepharitis (besides age). It's not a terrible thing. I use drops in my eyes twice a day and gently clean the inside of the lids with OcuSoft tissues.

(6,280 posts)...in that my problem was cataracts. Had surgery on both eyes, and now I'm at 20/20 except for anything close. Tried prescription glasses, but found myself taking them off constantly when not doing something close up. $5 reading glasses are easier on the pocketbook than $100 scripts, which of course, I lost not long after getting them. I checked out blepharitis. It would drive me insane. I go ballistic when I get a speck in my eye.
As for the texting and games, I use voice to text(I'm all thumbs ) and when I say games, I mean like paper toss. A flick of the thumb to get a paperwad into a waste basket.
CTyankee
(63,912 posts)everyone will eventually get them.
The blepharitis isn't that bad. Remembering to put in the drops after twelve hours elapses is difficult so I just established 6 am and 6 pm. The drops are a bit pricey but a package lasts a pretty long time...

(6,280 posts)I'm glad it's not a big problem for you. Have a great day CT!

(20,564 posts)if for some strange reason it is, and i can't imagine it is since you clearly have internet service, but if it is...
yes they have the very famous phone you might have heard of it the samsung galaxy i dunno 6 or something
their service is shite and their cost is high but they do have it
personally i would purchase a samsung 6 independently of any contract (because it's actually a great device!) and find another way to make phone calls, it just isn't that hard any more
it isn't crowded at your verizon store because nobody has to go there any more, it's 2015, & their high pressure sales pitches have gotten super stale
pitohui
(20,564 posts)you can buy any phone, iphone, samsung galaxy, whatev
since you already have internet at your house you don't need ANY cell phone provider to post photos
Instagram will work if you have zero cell phone service (i have tested this on several android phones personally) and you can take/post pictures even without paying one penny for cell phone service.
i assume if you still have a flip phone in 2015 it's because money is an issue but here's a way you can get your photos online and on Insta without spending a penny
don't buy a contract from verizo there's a reason everyone avoids them
buy or have some friend/relative give you their old out of contract cell phone and you can post all day long
i'm testing this right now with a phone a friend was going to toss in the recycling and it works great!

(63,912 posts)I've decided against the upgrade. It's far too much money. I dropped by again today and the plans (they don't do contracts any more, but plans are essentially the same thing) would be a whopping increase in my monthly payment. And Verizon is closing that store after tomorrow, I just learned!
I hope I can use Instagram...
