Last Saturday I worked my 13 hour shift at the urgent care center. Imagine my surprise when I found the September schedule and -- after 4 years of regular work at the hospital and now the uc center -- I wasn't on the schedule.
So I just found out today what they were too cowardly and inconsiderate to have the simple decency to tell me in advance. There are 2 people retiring at the end of this year, which I've known and which I anticipated could lead me to more work. No such luck. They hired the tech that left last spring and the other per diem tech, so now they are "overhired" and can't have any per diems on the schedule until the 2 techs retire.
Neither of the techs they hired requires training since both have worked here for years. The retiring techs aren't leaving until the end of the year, so they didn't need to hire replacements 4 months in advance.
So I'm left with zero income for 4 months. Except, fuck them. I've bent over backwards bailing them out of crisis after crisis. And this is the thanks I get. The lab manager "apologized" today for forgetting to call me on Saturday. Bullshit. She didn't just find out on Saturday that this was going down. And I saw her last Wednesday at the hospital -- she could have let me know then if she'd cared.
Tomorrow I start looking for another pt jb. There is an animal shelter a couple towns over with a p/tshelter attendant opening. I'll start there. I already care for animals 3-4 hours day. What's another 8 or so.

Best of luck!

(4,631 posts)I'd start working at whatever I could long before the 4 months started. In fact, I can't recall more than two weeks without working since 1975. Maybe it's more complicated than I recall...

(14,881 posts)They actually seem to expect me to wait until January and then they "might" be able to hire me p/t for 12 hours/week. Assholes.

(16,375 posts)Let's face it, they let you go. It doesn't matter that they might rehire you part time in 4 months. You need to apply right away, while you look for a new job.

(14,881 posts)per diem doesn't get any benefits.
In fact, in *most* healthcare jobs, per diem gets a "per diem differential" to make up for the lack of benefits, and that differential used to be a significant chunk of change.
At this lab chain, per diem gets nothing, nada, zip.
