I'm only about a 1/3rd of the way in, but there's a really touching scene in which the illegitimate boy, Luca, mournfully asks his spinster governess (who has agreed to adopt him from the orphanage at his biological father's request), "When will (my mother) be coming back?"
The governess replies (paraphrasing), "She won't be coming back, Luca. Remember I told you about my soldier fiance who didn't come back from the Great War? But love doesn't die. They are always with you, even if they aren't here."
For people of a certain age, that's a bittersweet truth.
