How can I tell if candy is fresh?

I like to buy in bulk, but sometimes the price is low for a reason--old candy.

I did find a great deal that might be a typo in the description of the ounces per candy. What I have is the GTIN number:

00040000044376

Can anyone tell me if that tells me what year the candy was made?

I just shot off an email to the company. If the candy is fresh, they might not realize that they are offering the larger version of the candy at the lower version price.
