I don't usually explain jokes, but (SPOILER AHEAD) when the character "applegrove"
realized that she had been mistaken about him asking for HER name, she panicked
and told him "her" name was what is actually the dog's name -- making things even
worse.

I see now something I missed before that might have added to the confusion.
