(54,405 posts)Not exactly the image of a stand-up guy, if you know what I mean. His little phony empire eventually finally came crashing down around him, but not before he had big fundraisers for local Republicans (of course). I heard the bank finally managed to sell his place for $5 million, or about a fifth of what it cost to build some 20 years ago. A guy who had been there told me that each of the 10 bedrooms had their own individual elevator to the ground floor (!!!!).

Just the monthly upkeep must have been more than I make in a year.

(67,111 posts)had a lot to offer. They were exceptionally wealthy, but not showy and were of old money, not out to impress, but had a nice place. I don't think I could even afford the electric bill for one day for these places.

(54,405 posts)This guy had a lot of street smarts but a huge chip on his shoulder and wanted everybody to know what he had. I had heard about his place but never saw it. When he got in trouble, it made the papers, and that's when I saw this photo of his place for the first time. I had heard it was over the top, but this still went beyond anything I had imagined. One guy, his wife and two kids living in a place to which the British royal family would probably consider their own residences as downsizing. You don't even need to get into the right and wrong of this--this was just sick.

(67,111 posts)Places that became abandoned for whatever reason, too expensive to maintain, no buyers, etc. It's going to be interesting to see if it sells at auction. It's a place that Mr. House built and will own forever or end up selling it for pennies on the dollar unless some institution or whatever/whomever picks it up. IMO, most people spending this kind of money would want a different location. It's so opulent and garish it's sickening.

(32,086 posts)It reminds me of some of the shots of the abandoned theaters and libraries in Detroit. Rush Dimbulb and that Trump kook also had places decorated like that.
