Gordon Lightfoot immortalized in bronze

[IMG][/IMG]

ORILLIA, ONT.—A sculpture dedicated to Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot has been unveiled in his hometown.

The legendary troubadour was in Orillia, Ont., today to see the four-metre-high bronze work called “Golden Leaves — A Tribute to Gordon Lightfoot.”

The sculpture depicts a bearded Lightfoot in his 20s sitting on the ground and looking down contemplatively as he plays an acoustic guitar.

“When I found out they were working on it, I thought, ‘Why me? What have I done that is so great that I should deserve to have a statue, a very artistic work done?’“ said Lightfoot, 76, in an interview shortly before the unveiling.

As far as statues go, this looks like an amazingly thoughtful creation. And as much as I'm happy to see Lightfoot honored, a charitable group spent 1/2 million bucks on this thing!

He's been a inspiration since I started playing guitar as a teen. Up here in Canada, his music got a lot of airplay in 70's and both reflected and shaped a generation or two's identity regarding 'Canadian' sounding music. Kinda the same thing as with Neil Young.

I think I paid $20.00 for the ticket. I always felt that I owed him more money. His humility proves that he deserves this honor.

Silly thing is, I learned all the lyrics at at a young age because my older sister was a dork who loved it back in the early 70s when it came out. Gordon Lightfoot got tiresome, because my sister played it over and over!

But I like it anyway.

because I had a sister who played it all the livelong day. I know all all the goddamn lyrics. I can do Karaoke to this G. Lightfoot song and others, too!

Nobody wants to hear me do karaoke on this song, but I would at least know all the words!!!

"Canadian Railroad Trilogy" is pretty hard to beat.

Glad to see Lightfoot still around to receive awards like this.

once, but met and talked to him at Whitefish Point MI in 1995, the 20th year of the Edmund Fitzgerald sinking. It is just about two weeks before the 40th now. I live in NW OH, several of the crew including the Captain lived in this area. "The Legend Lives On" here.
