I am so sick of watching morning so-called "News Shows"... they each have 5-10 minutes of news, then it's all about them & stories they like instead of any real world news, any real national news... they ALL broadcast either sensationalistic stories or fluff/feel good stories.
I stopped watching Today Show years ago (completely after they got rid of Ann Curry). Became sick of the pompous Lauer and when they got entertainer Viera it became more about them, what they liked, and too many private jokes among all. No real journalists.
Then started watching GMA - at first it was OK, but past 2 years they have become pretentious, again adding / speaking of faith, religion, Jebus, prayer every single show... it's all about celebrity or politicsis no better. When they hired Tebow I turned channel whenever he appeared. He really didn't last long and we all know why.
Can't stomach watching CBS Morning Show ... for some reason, talking heads are overblown with self importance.
And NEVER have and NEVER will watch MSNBC in morning as long as they keep Joe the Big Mouth on.
Our cable system does not and will not offer Al Jazeera America or I'd have that on most the day.
I guess as I get older (60+), I understand why older people become accepting that things change not always for the better and don't take part of things because the changes seem so corporate, so much about money, so much about self importance.
What do you watch and can you recommend some real news even if online?

(2,256 posts)Local news here (Milwaukee WI area) ends and then the "morning shows" come on... we've been DVRing evening comedy shows to watch after local news, but still like to be information on what's going on nationally (such as this morning cop in IL probably committed suicide and was not killed by 3 maniacs cities/PDs spent close to $500,000 hunting down).

(28,394 posts)I can't stand Morning Joe. The network morning shows are mind-numbingly boring, IMO.

Good funny mixed with news & occasional fart jokes.
But seriously I do wish she was better sponsored / promoted. The democratic upper tier should concentrate on regaining media markets. There is almost no "liberal" talk radio or other programming.
Pukes & churches in our area-Oregon-bought up all the radio shows they could. Then switched formats-TO LESS PROFITABLE FORMATS. Sorry about the caps but really-they get the long game. We need to so better there. And someone could probably turn a profit as we are dying for a voice.
In the old days I would recommend Washington Journal on C-span. But last few years it too has gone corporate and biases many of their shows.

(34,108 posts)I often just turn on the radio and listen to the local NPR broadcast which is a mixture of local and national and is pleasant to listen to and not a lot of fake perkiness.

I get almost all news here on DU (LBN) with a few days a week Democracy Now! on the radio and some few bits listening to NPR.
the husband likes to read a real paper newspaper but I find when I pick it up that I already know the vast majority of the stories from reading them here.

(9,894 posts)I used to watch morning news shows when they were news shows. Got my brain working. What's on now are emitting brain destroying death rays. Being in the same room with them I can feel the IQ points being sucked right out of me. They scare me.

(10,952 posts)Local news is always about the next weather disaster and the latest murder (and there have been a lot of murders lately, almost on a daily basis). I don't subscribe to any of the mega-cable stations and find that I don't miss MSNBC, CNN or the other channel that shall not be named).
I figure that if anything really interesting happens, someone will post a link or a thread talking about it.
If I could get Al Jazerra America I would love to watch it but my cable company does not carry it. They really should consider some type of live streaming fee so that those who want to watch don't have to wait for hell to freeze over if they live in an uber red state.

(32,095 posts)Mostly, it's because I like the local affiliate's morning news and weather. I also like Al Roker. I only watch for a while, and then listen to Stephanie Miller on web stream. Sometimes, I'll watch the video version on her web page, or at least parts of it.

(2,682 posts)Never have watched Morning Joe or any of the other morning shows. For a glorious piece of time, we had a progressive radio station and I listened to Stephanie Miller while I got ready for work and on the bus. Then we lost that, but Current TV had Bill Press, Stephanie Miller and Tom Hartman. Then we lost that, too. MSNBC is a poor substitute during the day. Lost Ed Schultz, Rev. Al replaced by a series of talking heads with no personality just spouting the corporate line. Evenings are better; Chris Hayes, Rachel Maddow, Lawrence O'Donnell. We are fortunate enough to have Al Jazeera and I do watch that a lot. Over all, I think it's better that I'm asleep.

If your cable doesn't have FSTV you can watch online (freespeech.org) or listen online from Chicago here: http://www.chicagosprogressivetalk.com/listen-live/
I try to listen to NPR but after about 15 minutes of half truths and poor presentations I shut it down.

(35,748 posts)Wow, Serialmom, this was a great idea for a post. I have found lots of good ideas here. I'm pretty sure I get AlJazeera in my cable line-up, so I am going to try it.
I don't watch anything consistently. If I do turn on TV, it's been Today Show, but only for snippets of this and that. I like the 20" commercial-free news segment at 7, but rarely do I get up that early. I will watch the 8 a.m. Today, but it's not 20", so after 5", I'm outta' there. I like Samantha and Tamron, and I can take Matt in small doses, but Natalie--ehhh. I really can't stand her. ABC's morning show is completely inane! WTF is that all about? It seems like a gab-fest. Too many people. Who is that zany blonde? I get the impression she's hosting a show in her college dorm lobby. I'm so afraid she's going to put her feet up on the desk, wearing heels.
CBS's morning show: Who said "full of themselves?" Yes. Can't stand it. I especially hate it when there are BFFs of famous talk show hosts who get a job because of....?
A lot of the mornings, I just like quiet. Sometimes I'll play some classical music, and read the hard copy NY Times and WSJ (I don't subscribe, but my neighbors do and they give it to me when they travel--which is about all the time). My job gives me an online subscription, but I am trying to spend less time on the computer, so I prefer the hard copy. I like to get a cup of coffee and go back to bed to read it, but by the time I get back there, I have to move a cat or two.
Eventually, by 9 p.m., I'll often listen to the BBC's hour-long newscast.
To the poster who put up the links for Stephanie, thank you! I'm going to try that, too.

Just heard an advertisement for Charles Koch's book!!! What the H*ll???
