(66,379 posts)I love Wagner and hate the Nazis.
I hate to make a "but at least Hitler loved his mother" argument, but although Wagner was an anti-Semite, and also not someone you'd want to lend money to, he was extraordinarily progressive on the subject of women's rights. In the Ring Cycle, all of the female characters are stronger and smarter than the male ones. And they always tell the complete truth.

(70,695 posts)Make no LISZT about it, haha!1 The title of the work and the name of the composer flashed on the screen. Where music is concerned I don't have much use for words/or lyrics. Melody is all there is. After the melody gets me hooked, if the lyrics are fitting: Fine.

(36,263 posts)so I thought that was likely what you had heard.
Normally, I am not a Liszt fan -- too much a-jinglin' and a-janglin' and a-clangin' of the piany keys -- maybe the reason I favored that clip was that the lead was given to the cello.
I often say that a good idea is a good idea, regardless of the source (even a blind nut can find a squirrel occasionaly) and I guess that applies to music too. Not too many musicians have been pillars of virtue, after all.

(70,695 posts)And if they were, they probably would be short on musical talent. Yeah, creativity don't like boundaries/limits. I get my musical sensibility from my mother's side and I got the basics of music and performance from high school band, just enough not to be intimidated by "musicians" who tend to be full of themselves. At a town fair a guitar supposed- virtuoso regaled the crowd with some licks, would stop and ask them condescendingly, "Did you see what I did there?!1" I walked away. I detest a certain amount of live performances, which remind me of our band ensembles where we performed like trained monkeys. I see musicians playing for cash taking it for granted that the gross public is contemptible and *should* idolize them. I see them as whores, not to disparage performing a service for cash. And I do not discount that lots of WORTHY things are way above my head!1
