May I make a PSA?

I don't post here often, but this seems to be the best place just to get the word out.

This morning on my run I came within a hair's-breadth of getting run over by a van backing out of a driveway. I run on sidewalks, I am always attuned to my surroundings, and I always slow or stop altogether if I see a car or van coming, or make eye contact with the driver. But in this case my proximity to the van was such that it was just outside my periphery until it was almost too late, and it was clear the driver was assuming things were good. I was running just fast enough that I was able to get past it, but still, it was the closest call I have ever had.

I know that a lot of neighborhoods rarely see foot traffic, so it's easy to assume the coast is clear when you leave your house. But, please, don't take that for granted -- take a few seconds before you back out to make sure the coast is clear in all directions. It will save everybody concerned a lot of aggravation.

We walk on a country road and are always dodging pick up trucks. People drive too damn fast on the back roads.

That's why I run on sidewalks rather than the street. The only times I don't are if I'm approaching a dog (not that I'm scared of it, but I figure I'm doing the owner a favor by not getting it stirred up) or if the sidewalk is messed up somehow. I'm back on the sidewalk at the first opportunity.

I'd also advise people to keep their driveways as clear as possible from blocking foliage and fencing, to have clear visibility of sidewalks and the street, too. That kind of missed sighting of an oncoming vehicle can happen, too.

Glad you are OK. We need all of the angry old Dems we can hold on to.

And I agree about the driveways. There is one on a regular route of mine that has tall shrubs on either side. Looks nice, but not particularly safe.

(BTW, I didn't mean to come across sounding like a scold in my OP. God knows I've been guilty of the same thing at times, but once I started running I quickly realized just how many hazards are out there that can be avoided if just a little care is taken.)

If drivers have a garage or driveway that connects directly to the sidewalk, try to take an extra minute to back-in to the garage; that way you are nose-out when you're ready to pull out. It's so much easier to see pedestrians and cars and much safer in the long run. That said, so glad you're OK.

Also, when riding a bike in the street alongside parked cars, it is good to watch for a driver opening a door. They NEVER look before they do and that can cause a world of hurt when on a bicycle.

I know it's still early, but this warrants a celebration!

And, yes, people need to be careful, both in a vehicle and on foot.
