At work I'm drinking a medium roast Ethiopian hand ground in my Hario ceramic mill, brewed in an Aeropress.
At home I'm drinking an espresso blend ground in an electric mill and prepared with my home espresso machine.

(53,339 posts)But I nuke the water and grounds together, then pour it through one of those cup-top filter cones.
AND I like McDonalds coffee. Senior coffee, including tax, is around 90 cents and refills are free. Woo-hoo!

(55,014 posts)I just seem to have no taste for it. I NEED a cup in the morning, but I drown it in sugar and fake powdered creamer. Good coffee tastes like crap to me so why waste the money if I don't like it?
now beer? that is a different snobbery!

(60,015 posts)I get my green beans from Sweet Maria - current favorites are various Ethiopian (both regular and natural process - such a huge difference), Kenyan and Guatamalan (Huehuetenango esp) coffees, roasted to whatever level is suggested by the vendor. Been home roasting since 2007 and my wife and I are now utterly spoiled! Pretty easy - I use a Whirly Pop on a coleman stove on my front porch. Roast three types, 10 oz of each, which lasts us 1-2 weeks. Amazing to still be using the same roaster for 8 years - not a bad 20 dollar investment! I think I've got around 40 lbs of green beans stocked - 2 lb bags of lots of different ones.
We are French Press users. Travel with our coffee beans, grinder and plunge pot (evokes some interesting looks when we are sitting at a Hampton Inn making all of those good coffee smells!)

(36,827 posts)I went through several different roasting methods including the hot air corn popper. The best solution I found was a homemade stainless steel roasting drum hooked to a motorized rotisserie on my gas grill. Sweet Marias is a great retailer and I still use them often.

(60,015 posts)Certainly broke me away from "charbucks" - when you realize that they roast all of the regional characteristics out of their beans!
Major Nikon
(36,827 posts)For whatever reason, lots of people like dark roasts and it's easier to achieve a consistent product year after year.
With lighter roasts I can taste a difference even within a few days difference from the roasting date. Consumers that go to a chain coffee house are going to expect a consistent product, so I can understand why Starbucks uses a dark roast, but it isn't that hard to greatly improve on the quality.

(50,983 posts)Seems like we must replace the SR300 every few years. Sounds like I need to get a Whirly Pop.
We buy green beans from Burmans, Sweet Maria and The Coffee Bean Corral. Right now I have one from Tanzania and one from Guatemala roasted and five or six unroasted varieties in partial 5 lb bags.
We hand grind the beans every morning. It gets to be a chore. We also use the French Press.
Our coffee is good!

(5,364 posts)Brewed strong on my Braun drip coffeemaker, a little bit of demerara sugar, and a cubic yard of Coffeemate powder to make it light brown.
I'm not a coffee fan or connoisseur: It's not a beverage per se'. I drink coffee only in the morning as both a wake-up drink, and to.....well...."stimulate" the plumbing in my lower abdomen to "liberate" me.

BTW, Why does this one never go on sale? Other Max. House is on special every few weeks. Never the 'Lite'.

tammywammy
(26,582 posts)It'll form condensation every time you take it out and water is an enemy to coffee before brewing. Storing in the fridge, it'll absorb scents from other food in there. You should store it in an opaque air tight container just on the counter or pantry.

I have expensive taste so this is the best compromise I can afford.

(3,919 posts)is a very good price and not expensive considering store beans where i live are $9.50 per lb.

(21,675 posts)Whole Bean French Roast from Costco. It's the only kind of coffee I buy. Grind it in an older Braun coffee grinder, and an old 4 cup drip Krups coffeemaker. Sweetened liberally with liquid Coffee-Mate Vanilla creamer, and just one cup a day in the AM. Obviously not a coffee connoisseur!

(86,650 posts)the medium roasts that my local roaster... they're in the nearest town of 1200, they use nothing but fair trade beans, teas and fine chocolates. I grind it at home in a Kitcheaid grinder that I got at a yard sale and brew it in my porcelain Melita cone-drip device and drink it from a "bistro mug I received from the heads of the Nez Perce Tribal Council as a swag-gift years ago. Every cup is perfect and I drink it as my one luxury of the day so that no matter what happens after, I can handle it because I have already had the best thing of the day.
