The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI've got a new job.
For those of you not keeping track, my current employer is cutting hours and talking lay-offs. They are also a pain in the ass to work for. I decided to get out while I can still do it on my terms. I can't afford pay cuts or a lay-off.
I am a truck driver and I found a local job hauling a flatbed. I'm all clear with the background checks, drug test, and physical. All I have to do now is take a driving test. The new company has agreed to let me do that before I leave my current employer. I'm a little nervous about it. I've been driving a dump truck for the last 4.5 years so I've been out of tractor-trailers for a while. I think I'll be okay, I drove tractor-trailers for 14 years before my current job, but I just wanted to have that bit of insurance just in case.

(15,480 posts)It's encouraging that your potential new employer is considerate enough to allow you to take the driving test without quitting your other job first.

You'll do fine with the driving test. Being a little bit anxious--just because it's been awhile--
will make you hyper alert. It will be fine!
Congratulations!

(3,286 posts)...would say you have hit the jackpot. Home most nights, good pay and presumably, good equipment. Plus, you are always within reach of "better" jobs if they come along. Though you all think I pick on you, I just wanted to chime in with my congrats when you do something good.
This job qualifies...
Best of luck.

(994 posts)Nothing you can't handle though. You'll do fine on the road test. I had a similar period driving other equipment and went back to it but this was pulling doubles for the first time. Had a real fun time learning how to hook them and I was always paranoid knowing I couldn't back up much.
Now I'm driving a garbage truck, a front end loader for dumping dumpsters. Slop from the trash drips down inside the cab and the pay sucks but it's better than nothing. I guess it's my career long quest to drive 'em all before I'm done.
Congrats on the new job and be careful out there, driver.

(10,418 posts)I am trained on it, but I haven't driven it in a long time. It's a really tough truck to learn how to drive, and most of the drivers where I work don't want to have anything to do with it.
Thank you and stay safe.

(10,418 posts)I hope that you will be able to find something without any financial hardship. I've seen good companies go down before and I know what a terrible feeling it is to be losing a job, especially when the news comes out of nowhere. The place where I work is going downhill, but I've had the benefit of being able to see it coming for a while.

(5,604 posts)I work(ed) for a good company, that's actually expanding its international bulk shipping and otherwise kicking ass. They just decided that our whole property division wasn't worth as much as a new freighter or two. I have a coffee every month with one of our vice presidents, and even he was powerless against the board of directors on this.
