Ok... here's a question and a bit of a rant..

Who out there is sick of the Seth Rogan, Galafanakis, Franco, Sudakis, Jonah Hill, Johnny Depp, types of leading men ?
What happened to the sweaty, take charge, masculine, squinty eyed heroes?

"Masculine, squinty-eyed heroes" tended to be rather thuggish types whose role was to rescue the beautiful but frail and slightly stupid heroine who seems to be capable of little besides screaming, crying and falling down. The new leading men play more or less normal guys whose function isn't to rescue some dingbat girl who always trips when she's running away, requiring the Big He-Man Hero to carry her off in his arms as she swoons. Phooey on that.

Rather than being a savior, they are real people that treat women like real people. Take the newest Rogan movie, The Night Before. Not his best movie by far but entertaining. But the interaction with his wife is that he realizes he isn't as strong as he thought and she is fine with it. Without getting to spoilers, it's a great interaction between them at the end. And the Joseph Gordon-Levitt character is all about figuring out who he really is and getting in touch with his emotional reality in order for the relationship to work.

As a guy, I find the hyper-testosterone heroes to be rather insulting. YMMV

http://www.cnet.com/news/study-male-sweat-causes-female-hormones-to-rise/

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley have conducted a study that concluded a few whiffs of androstadienone--a pheromone found in male sweat and perfumes--can raise levels of the hormone cortisol in women. Cortisol is associated with stress, but also arousal and brain activation.

As one who, in my father's words "sweats like a butcher" I was glad to see this study.

Maybe not the quality of some of the other actors, but he was a real MAN type of actor lol.

Steve McQueen. And a little before my time, but I loved Gregory Peck.

I never cared for Ryan O'Neal, though he was a heartthrob for most of my friends back in the day. I never like the "pretty" ones lol.

but maybe I'm not looking for the same things in a movie hero? Not saying one is right and one is wrong - just that they're different. I appreciate the tough guy role too. Machete is a (fairly) recent example - Danny ain't purty but he's squinty-eyed tough.

My wife and daughter might fight you on the Johnny Depp thing though.

Hell, I might too.

Rogan, Galafanakis, Franco, Sudakis, and Hill are usually doing comedy and Depp is just doing straight weird shit like he always has. I'm not sick of any of them. That's just not their style. I think they can be quite funny, so I appreciate them for that.

Sweaty, take charge, masculine... might want to check the porno section for that.

Those "wimpy dudes" are the type of fun guys that party like Vikings & are huge fucking goofs. You'll wake up from one of their parties with a ridiculous Mighty Mouse tattoo, in bed between Kiera Knightly & nameless Russian blonde, while someone's pet tiger is fast asleep in the hot-tub.

Seth Rogen - Depending on the movie, generally I let him be.

Galafanakis - I completely dislike his characters. They are not even funny to me. They act like sad, spoiled rotten individuals that are jerks to pretty much everyone.

Sudakis - I am not sure who this guy is.

Jonah Hill - Better as a side character. He can add to a movie, but I dislike his attitude. Decent actor though.

Johnny Depp - Depends on the movie. I feel like after Pirates, he has been coasting. Still fun to watch at times, but I loved him in Don Juan de Marco. He gets a lot of leeway from me.

I don't really consider Zach or Jonah to be leading men. Seth Rogen is more of an anti-hero. Jason Sudeikis is cute, but kinda white bread.

But we still have actors that are MOVIE STARS. Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Bruce Willis, Denzel Washington, and Daniel Craig and they don't get much more macho than Jason Statham and Lian Neeson (be still my heart!).

I hadn't seen it for decades, forgotten how fabulous the body makeup and overacting is. I love Yul Brenner! He's bossy and confident, such wonderful posture and presence. I was so fascinated I almost pharaoh of the sofa. I imagined throwing myself at his feet, groveling and begging for mercy as he stands over me with naked bulging arms crossed, my eyes following his strong manly legs under his gold-embossed skirt, searching for a sight of the royal obelisk like an early 20th century archeologist in the Valley of the Kings ...

Wait, what.
