(25,582 posts)Here in Japan, Christmas is the only time of the year supermarkets sell whole chickens and large pieces of beef for roasting, so I go hunting and gathering for Western food bargains. I still see articles insisting Christmas Eve is the biggest "date night" of the year in Japan, but that was an '80s Bubble Era thing when people had a lot of money to throw around and women needed to get married. There was a saying that a woman not married by 24 was like an old stale unwanted Christmas cake.
After a couple of decades of economic stagnation, Christmas is is a "home party" event for families or friends. Everybody's frugal and every year the amount of Western Christmas stuff decreases. My local market hasn't bothered to put up a Christmas tree for the last few years, they put up New Year's decorations instead. My friends who teach at universities say that their students have no idea Christmas was ever a big date night and find it funny.

(53,339 posts)Are you roasting or are you stocked up on corn flakes for frying?
The date night tradition may be shifting to the U.S. Local news in L.A. last night had a story on Jewish singles having singles meetups ("Matzoballs" on Christmas Eve.
